Walmart Officially Closes on Midtown Property

Plans for Walmart's midtown location.
It's official. Walmart now owns a big chunk of midtown Miami, and its plans to build a supercenter in the bustling neighborhood trudge on. According to exMiami, Walmart closed the deal in January for $8.2 million, though there are some conditions attached.

If Walmart's plans do somehow fall through and it wishes to sell the property, DDR, which sold the land and owns the Shops at Midtown Miami, gets the first right of refusal when it comes to buying it back.

Walmart must also turn over more than 14,000 square feet so DDR can develop other street-front retail opportunities to maintain the Shops at Midtown's mixed-use feel. The company must also develop its exterior in a way that DDR deems acceptable.

This all basically means Walmart can go ahead and do its Walmart thing as long as it looks sort of pretty.

Activists are still trying to derail the plans through zoning challenges, but it appears the retail behemoth's project will move forward with little resistance.

If Mister Rogers were still alive, even HE wouldn't want Walmart to be his neighbor!

I'm all for this.
The irony here is not lost on me.
Walmart is the #1 lowest paying US company.  They are setting up shop on the corner of Midtown and they are the devil incarnate because someone saw some documentary.
On the opposite corner of Midtown, a store which everyone loves and adores, that has never gotten any opposition is Target, the #3 lowest paying US company.
#2 is McDonalds and #5 Yum Brands! [Taco Bell] are one block away.

Mabel Gonzalez Nava wow, what a class act. No substantial counter argument brought to the table besides "Everyone complaining is a vagina". My dear, your random blurt is so elementary in nature that it proves what an atrocious job Miami Dade Public Schools did on your behalf. Best of luck living amongst the Meehami muck.

so Why not build it in an area that really needs its. The area around Midtown and the design district wont be the same in 10 years. Already there are fully renovated homes in that area. The ghetto will not be the ghetto for long. Its called

Gentrification. Moved away for  5 years and came back. didn recognize the area we no called midtown. I was blown away by the changes.

Walmart is the world's largest retailer with record profits and yet it pays it's workers close to minimum wage.

Those in the poorer surrounding areas should be thrilled.  Residents in the nice part of Midtown... not so much.

Eldon Lewis it's just not the traffic. It's the people and atmosphere they are trying to bring into mid town. Not a ghetto like it used to be or surrounds it. They are trying to develop a cleaner and more upscale and maintained community. Why do you think most walmart are near residential areas with low incomes? The people living in this area have no need for a walmart. It's unnecessary.

Besides food and drinks; what do people exactly buy in midtown??? Overpriced furniture?

If a small store can't provide exceptional service and a reasonably marked up product then why buy from them?? I'm not talking nickels & dimes... Some of these private store-owners are just fucking bananas on their mark-ups.

Why do morons think it's better to pay $4 for a toothbrush because a "local" sold it to you instead of walgreens for 99 cents? They both pay taxes and employ people... I even bet any miami walgreens store offers more jobs than any private employer in midtown would.

So in short, stupid people keep buying overpriced shit so you can feel better. Smart people enjoy going down to the midtown walmart and avoid the disaster of 163rd st.

Ever since I saw the living conditions of the Chinese that make their products I disliked them! Horrible unsanitary cramped on cots with no a/C no heat and the RENT IS THEIR WAGES!

First of all get the story straight, the community that has populated the now designated midtown since the late 60's are all for this department store chain for obvious reasons. The initial protesters are the recent property owners and developers that oppose the Walmart chain from attaining its permits. Please explain how this is a problem in midtown? The trendy retail outlets will in my personal opinion still maintain their clientele and obviously Walmart will meet the needs of the long time residents of the area. Yes I believe that there is a win win here.

Oh please, from the moment I heard that Wal-Mart had it's eye on this land I knew for sure that it was gonna be theirs. This just goes to show that if you have enough $$$ you can get w.e. you want. The community can fight it all they want, and the local government will make you feel like they care about your cause, but at the end of the day $ talks. There's no point fighting against the "machine" it's a never winning battle.

Seriously, don't see the problem. The only thing that I see wrong with it will be parking and congestion. All they do is sell cheap shit. It's also not going to be as big as other Walmarts. You people need to get over yourselves and go elsewhere if you don't like it.

Yes it is acceptable!  Freedom of commerce! Freedom of choice! You are free not to go there!

@whateveryousay  but you're obligated to pay the taxes that support the site and will help Walmart make more money!  how free is that?
