Alex Sink Loses Special Election, Dealing Blow To Democrats and Obamacare

Alex Sink loses again
Alex Sink just can't seem to win anything. Four years after her narrow loss to now governor Rick Scott, Sink again came up short yesterday in a special election for Florida's 13th congressional district.

The contest was closely watched across the country. It was widely billed as a bellwether for the national mood on Obamacare, and for whether Democrats could retake the house this fall.

The sinks signs suggest not.

Sink lost by two percentage points (48.5 vs. 46.6) to Republican David Jolly, a former lobbyist and assistant to the district's late representative, C.W. Bill Young.

When Young died last fall, the race to replace him quickly turned the Gulf Coast district just west of Tampa into a litmus test for larger issues like Obamacare and the future of the social safety net.

As in her battle against Scott four years ago, Sink had an early lead this time around. With greater name recognition than Jolly and no primary challenger, she raced to an early lead in the polls.

But Jolly hammered her on Obamacare, which he demanded be repealed. Sink said the Affordable Care Act should be fixed, not axed, and begrudgingly defended it as an improvement over the days when insurance companies denied people coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

David Jolly narrowly defeated Sink yesterday
It didn't take long for the national money to roll in, all $12 million of it, making it one of the most expensive House races ever.

Conservative groups such as American Crossroads backed Jolly, but Democrats still outspent Republicans by almost $1 million on the race.

Jolly won't have much time in Washington D.C., however. He has to defend his seat in just eight months.

Sink's loss will especially worry the president because the 13th district had been leaning left in recent years. Obama himself won it both times. And even Sink carried it back in 2010.

And although the retiree-heavy district is still more Republican than Democratic, it's bluer than the crucial battleground states in the Senate (Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina).

Four years ago, Sink lost as Republicans won the House. Now, with the House seemingly out of play and the Senate on the line, Democrats are starting to get that Sinking feeling once again.

Fernando Buch.....I just love the way you just assume that I'm a Republican... Lol.... Just to be clear I've voted for both parties and will continue to do so.... I wish I could relate to you in that sense but it seems you are like many that follow the political herd to the voting booth..... Obama may have won elections and I give him that.... He and his camp were great at get out the vote! But too bad he can't do the same with many or lack thereof accomplishments that he has championed.... Seriously think of what he has accomplished in his 6 years... And before you say that he is being stone walled by the Republicans in the house (which is true I won't argue that) he did have a super majority his first two years and all he could pass was a broken law that he seems to change everyday because of the garbage Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid jammed down everyone's mouths..... "we need to pass this law before we know exactly what's in it" (great quote from Nancy Pelosi). The President is so inept that instead of concentrating on what really needed to done (jobs and economy) he passed laws and created more spending initiatives that didn't work. Republicans are horrible as well because they have been the party of no, instead of trying to be a party of solutions...... Reason why I am being so hard on the president and his party is because he should be held accountable for the lack of progress... (please don't blame Bush after 6 years) I was just as hard on Bush for his spending on wars with lackluster results. I won't protect a politician because God knows they don't really protect us..... And it shows. I judge them all by their accomplishments or lack thereof....

True Detective should've been based out of Florida not Louisiana..then again the show didn't have so much racism and anti minorities overtones like this state does

My comment is directed at you Bolanos. Democrats never ever win special elections. If the elections would have been held during spring break, maybe but that's a big maybe. Alex Sink is a loser. She lost against Scott when she was up by like 6 points a week before the elections. Yeah she was the strongest candidate, but that doesnt tell you much. Florida Democrats are horrible. Just horrible. We sent Meek against Marco Rubio...this is how bad we are. And im saying we, because im a democrat. Good win for your camp. I mean it's 1 out of 435 and you already have the house, and it was a legacy seat from a republican, and the democrats have no chance of winning the house in 2014.....but yeah good win for you guys. Your camp should be worried about the Senate. Looks like we gonna take down your Senate Minority leader in Kentucky. You guys screwed up the senate in 2012, you could have win it all, but you didnt. And i think, this time around, you will do the same thing. As a Florida democrat, all i can realistically expect is to win the Governorship and the AG Race. Despite Obama embarrassing the republicans two elections in a row, Florida is republican territory with the exception of the 4 southern counties and orange county. I'm not that all convinced the Tampa area is that "purple" I still think it leans red.

Democrats never win special elections...the base is not mobilized like they are in general elections.

Sean Chambers.....difficult to win district? WTF are you talking about? This district is almist 50/50 split between Republicans and Democrats..... The current president carried the district twice and even Alex Sink carried it 4 years ago for governor..... Calling it a wash is just plain wrong if you think that the Democrats didn't pump twice as much money into this race compared to the inexperienced and not known opponent only shows that the bigger name candidate running on a platform of Obama care is very telling as to how out of touch Democrats are.... Plus this Candidate (Alex Sink) was hand picked by Debbie Wasserman and Nancy Pelosi because they thought it would be an easy win.

No, Democrats just need to get over this gerrymandering that has the repubs with an unfair advantage, Dems Havent lost a thing 1 seat and the whole republican party thinks it has a platform, truth is Democrats need to heed the will of the people incorporate real values and new ideas into their platform,

Technically nothing was lost, the district in question has been fairly solid Republican for the last 40 something years. Sink entered into a difficult to win situation and didn't do too bad.

is because Democrats aren't doing you any favors? they just want to control you the more empty headed independent you are the better for them.

Alex Sink seems like a nice person and a competent candidate. The problem is, She Exudes Boring. Watching her ads induces narcolepsy. To put it simply, boring doesn't win elections.

A district carried by Obama twice and Alex Sink also carried District 13 on her run for governor 4 years ago..... Goes to show that if you are going to run on Obama care you will run into a brick wall..... Dems are in big trouble this mid-term election causing the end result of Obama being a lame duck president for 8 years.

Jolly was a CHIEF of Staff, not "assistant" to Cong. Bill Young.
