Backyard Fighting Star Treon Johnson Died After Being Tasered by Hialeah Police

Categories: Crime

Treon "Tre" Johnson, a central figure in an upcoming Rakontur documentary on backyard brawling, died on Thursday after a confrontation with Hialeah Police. Officers responded to a report and found Johnson standing on a rooftop throwing coconuts at a dog who had bitten him. To subdue Johnson they used a taser gun and pepper spray. He died shortly after.

It's the third case of a man dying after being Tasered by police in Miami-Dade in less than a month.

A witness called police on Thursday to report that they saw Johnson jump into his backyard and beat his dog with a metal pipe. Johnson then jumped into another yard and had yet another confrontation with a dog. Police arrived to find him on the rooftop, and a short foot chase ensued. That's when an officer broke out the stun gun to assist in detaining him.

Officers noticed that Johnson's health began to decline. He was taken to a series of three hospitals, and died at the last one, Jackson Memorial, at about 6 p.m.

Johnson's mother told the Miami Herald yesterday that she had been told Johnson had been Tasered before his death. Hialeah police confirmed that today. However the full police report has not yet been released. An official cause of death may take weeks to determine.

This is the third time a young man has died after being Tasered by police in the last month.

Willie Sams, 21, died after a police confrontation in Liberty City back on February 5th. Last Thursday Maykel Antonio Barrera was also pronounced dead after being Tasered. No cause of death has been released in either case.

The recent string follows last year's death of Israel "Reefa" Hernandez, a 19-year-old artist who was chased and Tasered by police after tagging an abounded McDonald's.

Johnson plays a central part in Dawg Fight, a documentary on backyard brawling from the creators of Cocaine Cowboys that is set to be released this summer.

I think it's interesting that people hear of 3 taser deaths and, from what it looks like in the comments, the majority of them automatically assume that this is too many deaths, and that they are all police's fault.

I looked at each of the three that are dead, and all of them were fortunate enough to be given several chances to live: countless chances to surrender, countless chances to not break the law (all had priors), and heroic medical interventions (this clown got 3 hospitals with 3 teams of doctors). Not to mention the technology that gave them a shot at life, vs. a gun which would surely have killed them, or the nightstick that the BGI has completely neutered.

A Taser is classified as a "less-lethal" weapon. Not "non-lethal" and not even "less than lethal." Each of these fine upstanding citizens kept fighting, even after being tasered several times. They were criminals, and they chose to ignore the pain and keep resisting. The time-honored "nightstick plus taser" combination worked well in LA, but it cost them several million dollars and the BGI spun the story so that cops aren't allowed to use that technique anymore, lest their liberty be placed in double jeopardy like Koon et al.

Sure, the world could use a better less-lethal weapon, but what's the incentive to invent one? All the inventor would get is the relentless whinings about the deaths they would inevitably cause, and the accompanying legal liability. Better to just say, OK, you get 2 jolts with a taser, and then you get a plumbum enema. Anyone got a better policy idea?

Maybe if people would stop going out of their way to get tasered, this wouldn't happen.

The time to re-evaluate was a long time ago. Right after the very first death. A much closer look into these devices and their deployment on the streets is way over due.

For real, non-lethal, such bullshit. Pigs are out of control.

Juan Pollo, you should know better than trivializing police brutality. If in a particular hospital there is an unreasonable index of deaths after a certain procedure, and by comparison with other hospitals and procesures, for sure a re-evaluation would be granted.

"Officers noticed that Johnson's health began to decline. He was taken to a series of three hospitals, and died at the last one, Jackson Memorial, at about 6 p.m." That means that he died way after being tasered, just like he died way after waking up that morning. I would not call this cause and effect.

Let's re-evaluate hospitals since so many people die there.

How many have to die before they can stop calling them "non-lethal" weapons? You can get shot and survive, too.

this will be the 3rd case of the policemen involved going on paid vacations

@HarryTheHandyman Totally agree.  I love that the people who have died (even the vandal) were found to be breaking the law and then run from the law because they were caught breaking the law.  Then again, maybe tasers should be banished and cops should just be able to shoot people who run from them.  Maybe that would be a better solution to thugs who run away from the law after being caught breaking the law.  And for all those who are mad about the guy who lost his life beating defenseless animals, I don't see any asking about the lives of the dogs.  Hitting an animal with a metal pipe is something that the animal didn't deserve.  The man being tasered deserved it.  That's the difference.
