Ultra Music Festival: Female Security Guard Fights for Her Life After "Mob" Trampled Her

Last night's Ultra crowd got dangerously out of control.
Update: We spoke with a witness to the stampede that landed security guard Erica Mack in the hospital.

Ultra Music Festival was marred by a horrific incident last night as a "mob" of people pushed down a gate onto a female security guard.

The guard, Erica Mack, is now fighting for her life at Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to a Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman.

"They saw an opportunity to try to get in without paying," said Lt. Ignatius Carroll. "There must have been a whole lot of people. We found her on the ground, screaming in pain."

The 28-year-old guard works for Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC), which touts itself as "the leader in crowd management."

She was manning a walkway near the InterContinental Hotel between 9:30 and 10 p.m. when a crowd of would-be concertgoers apparently decided to force their way through the chain-link fence.

"A mob of people came and started rushing the gate and started pushing it," Carroll says. "She was doing what she was supposed to do -- telling them to stop -- when they pushed it down, and it fell on top of her... They just trampled her."

Carroll says the guard sustained "pretty serious head trauma and a broken leg."

"Her condition got worse as we were transporting her," he continued. He dismissed reports that she had died but said she was fighting for her life.

According to a nurse at Jackson, as of 7 p.m. she was still "stable but critical."

According to the Miami Herald, the incident could have been prevented. A law enforcement source told the paper that police warned festival organizers that additional fencing was needed around the area where the guard was trampled two hours before gates opened.

The accident also provides further ammunition to politicians who consider Ultra to be more of a nuisance than a boon to the city. Speaking with the Herald, Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado said promoters "acted irresponsibly," adding that he doesn't think Ultra should be held at Bayfront Park next year.

The security guard was just one of several hundred people treated by Miami Fire-Rescue last night. Fifty-one of those people sustained serious enough injuries for reports to be filed. Fifteen were transported to the hospital.

"A couple of people overdosed," Carroll said, "and there were some dancing injuries, like leg cuts."

Miami Police reported 22 arrests last night, including 15 felonies, six misdemeanors, and one traffic arrest.

But the trampled security guard was by far the worst incident to mar the music festival since a 20-year-old fatally overdosed last year.

"It's really unfortunate," Carroll said of the security guard. "It just shows the lengths people will go to just get into a concert for free."

I'm so glad she pulled through. Hopefully she'll have a FULL recovery. And in my humble opinion, she should get proper recompense for this nightmare from the production company or the security company......

Moreover: shame on people who rush fences and aggressively push through crowded areas. I saw a few near-stampedes at clubs.... caused by folks who wanted to cut in line or FORCE their way through a crowded place. People need to understand how easily a stampede can be triggered.

Security for events like this should always work in pairs and be visible to another pair and have radios with a supervisor checking all the pairs with a manager checking the supervisor and do this at MARLINS STADIUM OR SUN LIFE

1. Move the venue to Dolphin Stadium. Downtown doesn't need the hassle and the stadium can better handle douchebags that want to crash fences.

2. Don't criticize security when it is 150 or so against 50,000. What in the fuck are they supposed to do? How are they supposed to please you?

3. Most of you need better tastes in music.

Here is my taken this unfortunate situation the promotors are in: I don't agree with the people knocking down the fences BUT "Greed" is the result of what has happened and the slow destruction of a great event over the years .

I remember when the tickets were $65.00 at the gate the event lasted only one full day on Saturday from 11 till 1 am and the after parties at the Everglades Motel across the street went till Sunday in the afternoon or at Space on the roof tops.

The events are too long and they are too expensive. Todays TICKET PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS and Once you are in the gates you can't leave and the water is $5.00 for a .25 cent bottle from Costco and the food well can't complain.

Personally I think that the city of Miami has the responsibility of protecting the people of Miami during these events and it looks like they failed at the one, BUT however I still think greed plays a big part of the woman being hurt.

Ultra pays the City of Miami hundreds of thousands of dollars to help protect the gates from things like this from happening...with that said where were they when these people were trying to get through the gate ??? Oh they were just hanging out walking around like they aren't working!!! (I see this first hand!) So yeah please stop blaming the music event for others actions. Have a good Sunday

I hear drugs, no money, whatever the excuse, stop buying drugs year around and maybe they have money for a ticket ? Then again, they can't have any fun in their pathetic lives without being under the influence of something ?

Wow that's terrible I was hearing ambulances non stop that's such a shame for the people who respect ultra. So different this year than last year and still a tragedy.

Recreational marijuana legalization is going to normalize this type of behavior for every event ?

Urban beach week just brings a lot of unwanted attention and guests. Who wreck our city from block to block, bring gun violence, car chases and vandalism. My friend worked at a subway in south beach last year where he saw three gangstas literally steal the chairs from the outside patio area, then rip the side mirror off a parked car. You can literally take Urban Beach week back up North where it belongs. #thanksnothanks

If I hear one more person blame drugs on this craziness I am going to reach through the screen and smack the sh*t out of someone!! I in no shape, form or fashion condone violence, but I guarantee you this. No money on this earth would make me risk my life to try and keep the peace at Ultra. Obviously by the comments I see before me very few of you have ever been to Ultra and fewer of you have any formal training as a security guard - nuff said.

When it comes to admitting a huge crowd into a festival, security should be on high alert with strong individuals who can handle it. Shame she had to go through that and it's a shame that no one stopped the crowd to help her. But don't blame all of Miami on this. This festival is attended by people from all around the world. Hope she makes it out okay.

22 arrests last night alone? Tell me again why Miami caters to Ultra, but wants to shut down Urban Beach Weekend????

Daniel guerra you are so insensitive, that woman was going to work for a living and shouldn't be judged, rather the idiotic people who don't understand if you can't afford it don't go should be judged and blamed. That stupid 'festival' costs lives & people's futures for stupid mistakes and could be replaced by another "revenue " something far less dangerous and perhaps something more appropriate that doesn't give some people an excuse to do drugs and hurt people.

@joholso95  They need to bring in a real police force next time. And allow force to be used, because some people are too doped up to think properly.

@joholso95 totally agree no need for fences when you have stadium gate entry and the majority of The edm community is respectful these knuckleheads just didnt want to pay. I hope she recovers and is well compensated

lol. Its not festivals responsibility to provide adaquate fencing and security at its events. It pays the city the of Miami money for police and rescue because so many people are needed for a festival that large, not to provide security for the event. Its not the city's responsibility to put up, maitain or guard the fences, they are just there incase police or rescue is required.

Wow.  You sir are a true idiot.  Security is not a physical job.  They just check tickets and wristbands and stand at gate entrances to make sure the proper people pass through. They do not do the job of the police.  If a male Security guard had been standing behind the gate he would have been trampled just the same.

This has nothing to do with urban beach weekend you idiotic, closet, racist. Did you even read the headline? This article is about the Ultra festival which is primarily white, urban beach weekend is primarily black. They couldn't be more diffrent.

Nobody's blaming drugs on this incident.  Drugs were around hundreds of millions of years before this incident.

nicolesworlddd

Exactly! I feel this is a horrible incident .. But none and I mean none of the security knew what they were doing or anything about ultra.. I do think they should have

Added additional fencing , last year week1 day2 they mobbed the fence.. I witnessed

This, there was a women for umf severity she

Ran out the way.. Why risk your life !!!? DRUGSA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS it's anticipation lack of respect ridiculous prices and stupid rules ultra makes up every year! Yesterday the line was so bad when it started to move I was literally mad apart of a mob like force with no choice but to keep moving forward. ULTRA shouldn't be moved.. They just need new regulations.
