Critical Mass Crosses Causeway to Miami Beach Tonight

Today is the last Friday of April. Which means it's National Arbor Day -- you know, that one special day a year when you wake up early and rush out to plant a tree in a silent and unnoticed but deeply symbolic demonstration of your commitment to reversing centuries of human pillaging of our glorious and fragile Mother Earth.

It also means it's Critical Mass, when hordes of South Florida bicyclists take to the streets for a massive group ride. Here's where they're headed tonight:

The Miami version of the event meets at 6:30 p.m. at Government Center, at 150 NW First St., and begins at 7:15. Today's route heads north along NW 7th Avenue to the Upper Eastside before cutting east across the 79th Street Causeway to Miami Beach. It then proceeds south along Collins Avenue to Dade Boulevard before crossing the Venetian Causeway back west and finishing downtown.

This evening could well be the last time for months that the ride can use the Venetian Causeway: The County confirmed yesterday that the Venetian will be closed for an expected nine months to replace a section of its bridge.

In Fort Lauderdale, the ride meets by the War Memorial in Holiday Park, at 800 NE Eighth St., around 6:30 and begins at 7.

For those interested in joining the Miami ride, organizers advise bringing a bike lock and a copy of the route map. For everyone else, be kind to the cyclists, please.

Should be called CRITICAL MESS. That's what it was last night. It took me over an hour to go 2 miles, the traffic was so backed up. But the cyclists weren't inconvenienced or slowed down, they ran red lights, they cycled 4 abreast on a single lane, they stopped to drink water (or something) in the middle of the single lane, they flipped the bird at people, in short they behaved really badly. I wish it would just stop. Friday nights in Miami/Miami Beach are not the right time to hold a bike rally, the streets are congested enough as it is. And they need to learn the rules of the road, and the manners of the road.

Miami is filled with absolute idiots and Neanderthals. Do you realize how selfish and self absorbed you Critical Mass decriers sound?! This is not only a wonderful event, and an opportunity for the entire community to come together and raise awareness of safety to cyclists (parents don't you want drivers to respect the fact that your children are vulnerable?), but it is a regularly scheduled event that you can all plan ahead for! Happens the last Friday of the month, the Wednesday prior there is a route map posted. It's not rocket science. Look it up and avoid it if you're in a rush to sit your fat asses in front of a TV or whatever it is you people do (obviously not riding a bike). When I saw some people saying it's not fair I was in absolute disbelief! It's not fair that you have to wait in traffic a little while, sitting in your a/c with your radio, pushing a pedal a few inches to travel at 4 times the speed of a person on a bike who is actually working to propel themselves? You people are seriously ridiculous, I can't believe I live amongst some of you buffoons.

Hope there won't be a Lambo going down the MacArthur at 100 miles an hour.

So sad I missed it tonight. Hope everyone enjoyed and was safe. I heard the Miami Beach PD were on point watching over the riders as well as helicopters following the group. Honestly, CM has been going on for quite awhile and there are people commenting as if it's the first time it went down. If you don't like it then don't join in the community gathering and just stay off the roads or shift your oh so busy schedules just a tad to accommodate yourself and the others who enjoy the ride and the gathering of locals to do something different and great. People always complain that Miami has no sense of community or local love. CM looks like that to me. Just enjoy the fact that we are doing something fun and different. WHY NOT right?

Wow alot of hateful and arrogant a-holes living in Miami-Dade! Way to keep it classy! Maybe join the riders or find a detour! Jeez you people act like there aren't 29457987 roads and alternative streets to use.

Note to everyone FREAKING OUT over this bike ride: Reckless drivers shut down 3 causeways, created a lot more gridlock and even killed 2 people this week.

Considering most of our streets are already backed up due to construction this sounds like a FANTASTIC idea.

I got stuck on 22nd and 22ave for close to 45min once which made me miss getting an asthma inhaler at my pharmacy on key biscayne. I had a brutal night. So to say "share" is bullshit cause because they close the street off and take it for themselves. How about go to shark valley and ride?

Critical Mass is awesome. Every day people ride their bikes in fear because Miami drivers have no regard for anyone. See you "assholes" there. LOL

I hate critical mass. Fuck that shit. Nothing but trouble. Too many bikes out on the road at once. The people riding bikes have to obey traffic laws too but they don't. They run street lights and stops signs but they get mad at people driving cars. I can't stand it. Too much traffic. Just not fair to everyone else. I wish critical mass didn't exist. At least I wish it wasn't every month.

Alot of you people are really unnecessarily rude. You know exactly when critical mass is, and the group obviously makes an effort to let everyone know when and where they will be so you can avoid it and plan a detour if need be. Is it really so much to ask drivers to allow bikers to get together for a bike ride once a month? I understand how frustrating critical mass is for people in cars, but when you think about how much fun all of those bikers are having, and how great it is to have a free, healthy and active event that anyone can participate in, can't you excuse it? Maybe actually taking a look at the bikers and how happy they all are instead of sitting in your car and stewing will help bridge that gap of understanding for you. How about we try to stop only thinking about ourselves and being so angry all the time and actually be happy for those people who are having a crazy amount of fun (and maybe even try joining them sometime) instead?

For your own sake, please follow the rules of the road. I've seen way too many bicyclists run red lights or unnecessarily take up multiple lanes, then almost get hit by cars/motorcycles. If a car took up two lanes or ran red lights, they'd receive a ticket. Not sure where the 'above the law' mentality came from. Regardless of law, bike smart and cautiously. I'd hate to see a motorized vehicle get damaged :)

In Florida, the bicycle is legally defined as a vehicle and the bicyclist is a driver. Bicyclists have the same rights to the roadways, and must obey the same traffic laws as the drivers of other vehicles. These laws include STOPPING for stop signs and red lights, riding with the flow of traffic, using lights at night, YIELDING the right-of-way when entering a roadway and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks. Educate yourselves.

bicycles disrupt the flow of traffic.if you can't do the speed limit shouldn't be on the street.just another accident waiting to happen?

I have seen them on several occasions go through red lights. There needs to be a police presence to issue citations to these assholes. They also intentionally impede traffic.

Gabriel A. Valenzuela

Listen Vince... I do ride a bike. I have always ridden bikes since I was a kid. I ride almost every Saturday if time permits. I always give cars the right of way. I never get cocky and arrogant like you and think I am the master of the road. So do me a favor Vince get off your Ivory Tower cause you look and sound like a blundering idiot. And wishing bad on people just shows what kind of a person you really are. You don't know squat about me and yes you made an ass out of yourself.

They are assholes. They can't legally direct and block traffic. If you blow the horn they ride by kick or spit on your car. I wonder if the lazy cops in Miami will ever do anything to these idiots.

If you were next up at the light and had a green, you should've just inched forward through the group.

The cops never bother with the idiot drivers, why would they bother a bunch of people having fun?
