Miami Ranked the Third Least Funny City in America

Well, it has been a while since Jackie Gleason was broadcasting here.
Do you think this is some sort of joke? Miami is apparently in the midst of a comedy crisis, according to a new study that attempts to rank each of America's 50 largest metro areas by how funny they are. Miami came in 48th out of 50.

Dr. Peter McGraw, founder of the Humor Research Lab at the University of Colorado Boulder and the recent book The Humor Code, looked at several factors to determine a city's relative humor score:

  • Frequency of visits to Cheezburger comedy websites, such as Lolcats and FAIL Blog.
  • Number of comedy clubs per square mile in each city.
  • Traveling comedians' ratings of each city's comedy-club audiences.
  • Number of famous comedians born in each city, divided by city population.
  • Number of famous funny tweeters living in each city, divided by city population.
  • Number of comedy radio stations available in each city.
  • Frequency of humor-related web searches originating in each city.

The study didn't release much info about the cities outside the top ten on the list, but Miami didn't even make the top five of any of the various factors taken into account.

Of course, with the recent closing of the city's biggest comedy club, the Improv in Coconut Grove, it really shouldn't be much of a surprise that Miami didn't fare well on the list. The city's two most famous born-and-raised comedians are Victoria Jackson and Rita Rudner, so that probably didn't help much either.

Apparently being the home of Sábado Gigante, a source of cutting-edge humor if there ever was one, doesn't account for much.

The only cities deemed less funny than Miami are Jacksonville and Fort Worth.

The top five funniest places are Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, D.C., and Portland.

Pretentious assholes who have too much money and drive their Lamborghini's into other people at 120 m.p.h. Miami has become nothing more than a playground for jerks.

Hey Peter McGraw (Research guy) your research is flawed and hey Kyle (author) you're a moron to say Miami improv changing locations speaks to the quality of the funny.   But I hope you get a lot of clicks.   Good job.

Miami is where I grew up till I was 16 and most of my family still lives in that dump! I moved to Key West long ago to get away from millionaires with empty pockets, snobish stupid people and horrible traffic! If Miami people would even know what the rest of country thinks about you, just ask and they tell you. Miami is beautiful! The people are angry and ignorant!

I just moved from Miami to Portland Claudio. It's um, not miserable here. What's the opposite of miserable? it's that.

Claudio-some of the most down to earth, original, real people that I have met in my life are from all four of those cities. I have never met an asshole from Portland. What does taxes, crime, and weather have to do with this article. It's about humor

the cities that are the "funniest"/have the best comedy clubs are that way because the daily life there is bland. There's no demand for a comedy clubs when you're surrounded by silly people, silly architecture, silly drivers, silly art, silly music events, etc. Miami is inherently silly and fun. Unlike those other places.

Looks to me like the study only counted English language comedy... So odds are we're a lot funnier than it's giving us credit for.

Paco is correct, we have great weather beautiful people and who cares that Chicago and Washington DC are funny, they have to be have you seen the crime rates, Portland is miserable all year all it does is rain and the skies are alway gray all year and Boston has the highest taxes in the country.

BWahhhha, just because we don't go to comedy clubs? LMAOOOO, have ANY of you , including the morons who took this poll ever even LIVED in Miami? Really? Seriously? where daily life is already more comedy ( or farce) than anybody can possibly stand? Who NEEDS a comic when you are faced daily with situations so improbable that nobody could possibly fail to laugh maniacally.

I just think people in Miami can be very disingenuous and very snobbish(for no real reason) theres so much to laugh about in life, why spend it scowling?

That's because people don't stop long enough to observe. Just attend one of the many "cultural" affairs and the clothes alone will amply demonstrate Miami's sense of humor.

Does the pollster speak Spanish?  Miamians do a lot of hilarious shit, but much of it isn't in English.
