NRA-Backed Bill Would Allow Unlicensed Carry of Guns During Riots and Natural Disasters

Because the National Rifle Association has never met a problem it doesn't think it can solve with more guns, it's backing a bill in Tallahassee that would allow anyone with a clean criminal history to carry a concealed weapon in the event of a riot or natural disaster even if that person doesn't have a permit.

Yes, because if there's one thing riots and hurricane aftermaths need, it's more people with guns!

The House version of the bill is slated for a floor vote tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Senate version cleared its third committee Tuesday.

The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature has become notorious in recent years for pretty much passing almost anything the NRA wants.

However, the Florida Sheriff's Association is vehemently opposed to the bill.

"To allow people to go into a riot while concealing a gun without a permit is the definition of insanity," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said, according to the Miami Herald. "The bill is crazy. It's absurd."

"This bill is a very narrow, simple, clear bill," sponsor Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen counters in the Orlando Sentinel. "This bill is for people who are lawfully allowed to possess a firearm in their homes to be able to take that firearm with them when they are evacuating in an emergency."

The bill would relax concealed carry restrictions during government-declared states of emergency. However, the bill would not allow people to carry a gun with them into prohibited areas such as hurricane shelters. Supporters aren't quite sure what would happen if people brought their guns with them on the way to a hurricane shelter once they arrived.

I guess this idiot who wrote that was not aware of Hurricane Andrew or the atrocities that occurred in Katrina where the federal government disarmament of law abiding citizens to fend for themselves while criminals who don't give crap about the law looted, robbed and even raped people who were defenseless beacause they were unarmed. All these sheep's that think authorities are your daddy they are not obligated to protect you. Wake up

First of I don't need no stupid law to tell me how i can defend myself.

I wonder how many of you Fascists complaining about guns were around South Dade after Andrew came barreling through?  The only law for days was the one on your hip.

Makes no difference...its not like we have a riot and/or national disaster that often...but if you loot, beware!

You silly anti-gun crowd ever live through Andrew in Homestead. Don't lie...we've all seen the scores of pics of homeowners defending their shit with some form of firearm.

I have no problem with felons and the mentally ill LEGALLY carrying weapons after a storm. At least when they claim "stand your ground" it would be on a legal basis.

I think people don't understand this bill. During emergency or evacuations, you are either going to leave your gun at home if you don't have a CCP, of carry it with you with you belongings. Leave it home while your gone and it will most likely get damaged if your home is destroyed or stolen by looters if it's broken into. Which would want? To leave it while your gone or with you when you might need it the most?

I have my license and I am feeling uneasy about this. So if there was a riot or a disaster anybody can have a gun? Then why did I have to go through a background check for?

you'd rather walk around unarmed in a disaster ? you can't be that stupid ? law abiding citizens are not the problem... people preparing to loot an Rob people in a disaster are ! if you're afraid of guns don't buy one. some of us aren't afraid of anything !

I do not think we need a law for this. Its common sense to be armed after a natural disaster, particularly in cities. Either way, though, I SUPPORT the right to carry arms.

All the criminals have them, even if you ban them all. So, the logic is penalize everyone and only the state, crazies and criminals have guns, wonderful idea.

That makes to much sense not to pass. Remember New Orleans, it was like Mad Max world.

Seems like the only ones talking crap are the ones that were not here during hurricane Andrew, The hammocks area and Cutler Ridge was pitch black and there was sporadic looting, They even had to call in the National Guard to patrol the areas, if your stuck in your house with your family you have the right to protect your family and valuables from looters etc

Carrying a gun during a riot or natural disaster is a regular thing people do here in southwest Florida. It doesn't mean you have the right to carry a stolen gun- it just means the restrictions requiring a carry permit to have a gun on you will be suspended during these times. It's not "more guns." It allows people to have a gun on them for their own safety.

Is not more guns stupid its the same guns just not everyone has a license to carry conceal, If there is an evacuation I'm not leaving my guns behind I rather risk been arrested before allowing to fall into the wrong hands. The reason for the law is to protect law abiding citizen

Gun control only work on law abiding citizen Criminals don't follow laws.

Don't be such a pussy about guns!

Stephany Ramos I am a concealed weapon permit holder since 2012... the hashtag girls with guns, happens to be a community of women who like guns. I am pretty sure most of them are permit holders like me. If you read the article you will understand what the NRA wants.

Wow what a great idea!!.. NOT!! Its a wonder we havent blown ourselfs up yet.. why not make it ok for people to run around with nukes too

Daniel Ballarin

look at Venezuela for instance... if Guarimberos had weapons like collectives have, the government would think twice before attacking civilians like they do, granted there would be a civil war, but it wouldn't be a Fascist take over as we see...same thing with Ukraine, Russia wants to invade...fine...before you come into my house and deport everyone I want a fair shot before being separated from my family and well, tortured, raped and led to dig my own grave....I am usually against weapons that don't serve a purpose for hunting, yet if a disaster were to happen, I know that people that have nothing to loose will arm themselves than the ones that just want normality to peacefully resettle

Just ask Reginald Denny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc_SgpyJWRY "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." -- Thomas Jefferson

People love to read the titles and just leave a comment. Why bother reading the article, right? smh

Um no, How about LICENSED girls with guns. Guns aren't the issue, it's the people with access to them. Seriously, I never supported banning them but I'm not gonna support obtaining/carrying them that easily either.

On a side note. Florida is the 9th state with the least gun ownership per person in the US. We really arent too bad.

Sounds like common sense when you think about it. After Andrew, a lot more looting would have occurred if people weren't walking around strapped.

I guess you did not read the bill where it says: "a person who may lawfully possess a firearm and who carries a concealed firearm, on or about his or her person while in the act of complying with a mandatory evacuation order"

miguel106
miguel106

For when there are no evacuation orders? Like every normal day?

miguel106

That is why we need this bill to be signed into law.
