This past Sunday, DJ Laz, AKA Lazaro Mendez, took his 40-foot powerboat out for a day of partying to promote Voli Vodka off the shores of Key Biscayne. The boat became stranded on a sandbar. An ill-thought-out attempt to free the boat ended in the death of 23-year-old Ernesto Hernandez after he got caught in the propeller.

Mendez, one of Miami's most popular radio personalities, was behind the wheel at the time of the accident.

Laz had been promoting the party on social media earlier in the day to his more than 23,000 Twitter followers and 11,000 Facebook fans.

According to Local 10, witnesses say about 20 boats ended up heading out to the party, and alcohol was freely flowing.

When Laz's boat got stuck, several people decided to help out by pushing the boat off of the sandbar rather than wait for high tide.

"Unfortunately, there was another young man who came to assist. He ended up, we don't know why, in the rear of the vessel, and one of the engines actually caught his body, his torso, causing him to suffer some very severe injures," FWC Officer Jorge Pino told CBS Miami.

Hernandez was rushed to a hospital by a rescue helicopter but did not survive his injuries.

Several witness tweeted about the incident.

Mendez is said to have cooperated fully with the investigation, expressed sympathy, and voluntarily gave investigators a blood sample. No charges have yet been filed.

Thats twice now that two people are killed due to this man. Hes irresponsible and in my opinion should be charged with murder.

You don't let people get behind your boat and start to Rev the engines.

He could of very easily called Sea Tow. Especially when your DJ. Laz and have Money.

Now an innocent young man is dead.

Be more responsible. And get some common sense.

Boats get stuck in sand bars all the time. This sounds like a tragic accident. I hope that dj laz and everyone affected are able to get through this, and that something positive comes out of this unfortunate situation. DJ Laz is a major local figure in this community and life happens. No one is perfect.

Gloria Estefan and Hubby had their brand new boat out..42' four winns .A wave runner collision fatality...middle of the day 1.5 m offshore - 1-2' chop - Unable to say who did what - Likely the runner wanted to jump a wake and timed it wrong.   Gloria claimed to be asleep at the time...strange as that sounds.

Big power boats require some skills...celebs usually do not have them because the boat is a 4-6 times per year hobby then back to the rack for winter.

Sea Tow is always lurking around these sandbars waiting for idiots who run aground. NEVER get into the water behind a boat with engines running! So tragic and senseless. You know everyone had been drinking.

Its a tragedy - and thank God no one else got hurt, it could of easily happened.   The fact is the crowd was all drunk and out of control.  And  it was GHETTO from all walks of Life.  But, Metro, City of Miami & Wild Life did nothing about it and just looked the other way - I assume the cops all know DJ Laz since they allowed him not to take a breathalizer test - WHY there a dead kid????  Laz had the motors running all day to keep the radio going.  As a experienced boater, to assume he is, he should of know better.  I do not wish any wrong to him, he has done lots of great charity work, and he seems to mean well.  It was a Alcohol induced day, and all those idiots trying to kiss his ass are lucky that there not dead too.  Didn't their parents teach them not to walk behind running cars, in this case a big boat with 4 motors?

MY PRAYERS TO THE ERNEST HENANDEZ family and mother, there are no words to describe what the family must be going through.

Accidents happen - LAZ is a good guy. Give him a break. All families involved need sympathy not criticism from people who were not there.

Actually, although Frank is clearly a racist, let's keep it real guys. Truth be told, our Cuban friends are really not that good with boats, in fact they are amongst the world's worst mariners. ( just visit any Miami marina on weekends and this will become immediately clear) But that fact has nothing to do with an accident that could have happened to ANYBODY. Accidents happen, its a universal human trait. This is just a sad tragedy for everyone involved. The only caveat is whether liquor played a role in both the positioning of the now deceased 'helper" and /or the driver of the boat. In which case, there MAY be liabilities involved. Either way, I highly recommend treating the driving of a boat in the same way we treat the driving of a motor vehicle. DO NOT operate while impaired by any substance. It's simply common sense.

Cubans get upset when you say anything about them...but they are some of the most racist people I've ever met. Even when you're doing better than they are, they still somehow think they are better than you.

Moving on from that... Race aside....Laz should see jail time for this kind of negligence. Drunk or not (and I'm sure he was over the legal limit)...any boater with any common sense knows not to have outboard props running when people are even NEAR the back of your boat...its boating 101 ! There’s no doubt that not only was he impaired but the people helping him probably were impaired also and all too eager to help a “famous dj” push his boat out of the sandbar…No one was thinking straight in this incident…not laz…not the people pushing him out. But, at the end of the day…it ALL falls on the Captain…it was HIS responsibility to insure their safety back there.

Laz should loose everything for this !

If you weren't there, save your opinions or at least think a little more objectively. I WAS there.

The fact is, this was a freak accident; a very sad one.

Everyone can crucify the driver, but that won't stop another accident from happening.

People need to THINK before acting on BOTH ends. In this case: Captains AND Good Samaritans.

Ppl pushing = engine OFF - ZERO exceptions

Motors running = get AWAY and let them figure it out bc your safety comes FIRST.

Blaming 1 man won't avenge, or ease the pain.

No one will ever keep you safe other than yourself. Before ever helping anyone in ANY situation, you think of YOUR safety FIRST! "Clear the scene"

My heart is heavy. No one should ever have to go through something like this! My love and respect to BOTH families <3

Laz should have known better then to put people behind/next to the boat with the engine on especially while throttling up the engines. He's an idiot and they should have checked for alcohol and/or drugs.

Frank Castle, You're a jackass. I suppose if the same thing had happened to me then you would say something about me being a typical drunken Irishman. (But just for the record: The Captain of ANY vessel is 100% responsible for the safety of his passengers and crew. That's both US Coastguard and Maritime Law.)

Armando Fraginals
Armando Fraginals

Frank Castle why so much ignorance?. Being cuban would mean he is good with boats by the way. Better question is what the fuck was this guy doing at the back of a boat with the engines on? You never push a boat from the back its much lighter in the front and there is no danger from propellers. Was this guy intoxicated? I'm just saying you can't put all the blame on laz, he should have made sure the no one was back by the engines if he was putting it in gear though for sure.

Frank what the hell kind of thing is that to say?? C'mon man!!

Michael del Vice

When a boat gets stuck in the sand you don't use people power and engine power together, it's too dangerous....captain's fault; engines should have never been on. Sucks, LAZ is good guy.

Frank Castle,

Where are you from?  Who do you think you are talking about Cubans.  You are so full of shit its ridiculous.  Your jealousy seeps through your words.  I have read some stupid comments in my life but your surpassed them all.  You need to get some education which you obviously lack you racist piece of garbage.Edit (in 2 minutes)

@reevesboi85 How very racist of you. I am very sorry that you did not have the privileged of being born Cuban or of Cuban decent. Please don't clump an entire culture into one very narrow minded statement.

Acirema

@reevesboi85 I assume you know all Cubans or at least thousands of them to be making such a statement.  Education is free for the most part people go get some.  To stereotype is ignorance at its finest.  Generalization is also very mediocre.  Please refrain from looking bad making these type of statements.  You look childish, racist, ignorant and so many other things.  Wow

Doomsday_Survivor

you never give the engines throttle when theres people behind or the the side of your boat. as the captain of that vessel he should've known better. to let people push him from the rear while he opens the throttle, its just plain stupid and irresponsible.

Doomsday_Survivor
Doomsday_Survivor

@hellloooo sorry but the "imbecile" is you. they didn't do that and he refused to take a voluntary breathalyzer. I am not saying he was drunk or even drinking, just stating facts. The Captain of ANY vessel is 100% responsible for the safety of his passengers and crew
