Dolphins Fine Don Jones for Homophobic Tweet About Michael Sam

If you're on a team that just went through a high-profile bullying scandal that involved lots of homophobic insults, it's probably not a good idea to take to Twitter to react negatively to news that the man who could become the NFL's first openly gay player was drafted. But homophobes typically aren't the smartest people.

Dolphins defensive back Don Jones couldn't help himself, and now he's been fined and temporarily suspended form the team.

Sam was chosen late in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams. ESPN aired his emotional reaction to the news which included Sam kissing and embracing his boyfriend.

Jones tweeted a vague "Omg." When asked by a follower if he was referring to Sam, Jones replies "horrible."

Dolphins brass came down swift.

"We were disappointed to read Don's tweets during the NFL Draft," said Head Coach Joe Philbin in a statement. "They were inappropriate and unacceptable, and we regret the negative impact these comments had on such an important weekend for the NFL. We met with Don today about respect, discrimination and judgment. These comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program. We will continue to emphasize and educate our players that these statements will not be tolerated."

Jones was fined an undisclosed amount and will be excused from all team functions until he undergoes some educational training.

"I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media," said Jones in his own statement. "I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment. I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team and I wish him all the best in his NFL career. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ross, my teammates, coaches, staff and fans for these tweets. I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward."

so if you approve seeing a violent act on tv

you are saying that that means you are pro violence

oh and I am FOR gay rights

Not approving homosexuality does not necessarily means homophobia.

We all have different opinions, and that does not mean that we all hate each other. Pointing out our differences does not equate to hatred.

Now, if somebody wants to be a drama queen, that's another story.

Anthony Lambert, by all means go the fuck to Russia then. I think it's sad that a close minded ignorant breeder like you will pass the shit you're spewing here to kids. Even more pathetic is that you'll pat yourself on the back while doing it thinking you're doing something useful

Linda Yesenia

Anthony Lambert you are the exact problem with this country. I hope your kids are gay. To each their own but to have such a strong passion and hate for someone that doesn't share your views is sad. I hope that someone could bless your small soul and let love for ALL in. May you find your own peace within that demon of a mind you have.

You homos are a disgrace to this country,I dont want my kid seeing two men kissing, you sissies wont win, traditional marriage will trump your BS cause,go and get yourself a real woman instead of some skinney sissy,I dont frequent anything LGBT,screw em all, leave our kids and society alone, just go away

Nobody wants to play a real sport with a mam kissing sissy, kids and real sports fans dont wanna see that bull, real men deal with real women,I think its a disgrace how homos are so excepted in this country,I love Russia's stance on these homos

The Dolphins should concentrate on winning football games. I've had enough of all this political correctness BS. It has gone too far. Every one has the right to speak their mind, whether you agree with that opinion or not.

Gotta love the people who say he should be treated like everybody else and whine when, like everybody else, he shared his joy and emotion with his significant other. If he were kissing a woman half the whiners and haters here wouldn't have anything to say. And please stop showing your ignorance. It's not a sexual preference. But I'm pretty sure many of you know that because you may be stupid but not that stupid

See...I just don't understand what his sexuality has to do with football. Can he play? Jason Collins went through this too. Their sexuality has nothing to do with being able to play the sport. Personally, I think acceptance may happen more over time if they didn't make their sexuality the main focus. Michael Sams is a football player. Jason Collins is a basketball player. End of story.

Nobody is taking away freedom of speech. It's just like it would be at school. If you bully someone, you get in trouble. Simple as that.

What happened to freedom of speech?

Geno Fowler

It wouldn't have been a big deal had Mr. Sam went into the draft as a football player... period. But HE didn't, did he ? Nope... HE made his sexual preference the focal point, NOT his ability as a football player...

Heath Alan Springston
Heath Alan Springston

Freedom of speech doesn't equal hate speech... just because you CAN say it.. doesn't mean you SHOULD.. plus take some responbility.. You can say what you want but be ready for the consequences.. besides everybody gets offended about something so don't act like your pannies don't get in a wad over SOMETHING!!

Heath Alan Springston
Heath Alan Springston

well Dolly straight people are so HUNG up on gay people and gay men that all they do is talk about us.. I wish being gay wasn't a big deal anymore and we could live our lives... straight people are so fucking clueless about anything.. THINK!!! don't give me the "poor me" attitude.. go talk to a gay kid who is bullyed at school to the point of being suicidal THEN maybe you will get your shit right

#1 This was exploited from the word go - by Mr. Sam himself. If your sexual preference is personal, why do we continue to have these "breaking news" Joe Blow has announced that he is. gay stories? #2 Mr. Sam was drafted at the end of the draft, so why was his call given so much media attention - other than to give him a platform to express his sexuality? I watched the draft all three days. No one (not even Mr. Football) got this much coverage nor spent this much time celebrating with his significant other. #3 I have heard both gay men and women recoil in disgust at the sheer mention of heterosexual affection. How is that fair?

Andrew Creech

I see, so it's unacceptable to have an unpopular opinion and voice it, if you do you're going to "suffer the consequences." People try to claim that since this isn't the government, civil liberties aren't applicable, but they fail to realize this is the whole fucking point of civil liberties. If were ok for corporations to violate your civil rights, they'd never be liable in a discrimination case. Yes, ladies and gents, it's called free speech. That is the right to voice your opinion without persecution. Quite clearly this player is being persecuted for his unpopular opinion. "But the consequences of free speech" ...just shut up now. The consequences are the responses to your voice, not administrative rulings, or fines. It's unjust and unamerican, and you should be ashamed of yourselves for bending over and giving up your right to freedom so easily.

All transgressions are forgiven when winning happens. Do that.

I'm confident after recent years that people don't know what freedom of speech means...and every time I hear that with a hateful message, I feel ok...because it makes it easy to point out the idiots in society.

... SAME C.R.A.P. / DIFFERENT DAY DIFFERENT REACTIONS TO DIFFERENT distrACTIONS If you / me / we, the people are legally but wrongfully allowed to judge, criticize and financially penalize other human beings for their personal opinions, beliefs, likes and dislikes, then shouldn't yOUR wrongful ACTIONS be rightfully taken against each and every PREJUDICED individual on a fair and equal basis. Where is the multi-million dollar fine and lifetime ban from football for Mr. Don Jones's prejudiced remarks against another human being who is gay? YOU / ME /"WE, the People" are just as much as 'part of the problem' as you / me / "we, the people" are 'part of the solution'. History has repeatedly PROVEN that judging and penalizing 'others' for their opinions and beliefs is not the solution. It does NOTHING to "cut the c.r.a.p.". In fact, it only adds more fuel to a fire that has been raging for hundreds of years and it further suppresses yOUR "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" that millions of v.i.c.t.i.m.s. have died fighting for or been killed by soldiers who are supposedly fighting for it. YOU / ME / 'WE, THE PEOPLE' DO NOT NEED TO BE ON THE SAME TEAM TO WORK TOGETHER... ... Regardless of yOUR a.g.e., r.a.c.e., o.r.i.g.i.n., d.n.a., f.a.i.t.h., h.a.b.i.t.s., beliefs or opinions that may differ... ... yOUR name, address, telephone #, credit card #, money, vote, or friendship are not needed for "We, the People" to peacefully work together alone to create, identify and s.h.a.r.e. ideas, suggestions and SOLUTIONS that have proven to "cut the c.r.a.p." and save time, energy, property, money, natural resources, yOUR ENVIRONMENT and the LIVES of children, adults, pets and wildlife... https://www.facebook.com/behappynewsman

Homophobic?... people just throw that term around carelessly now when someone is against homosexuality. an ACTUAL homophobic person refuses to interact with a homosexual because of said phobia but what he said in his tweet is just a matter of personal opinions. free speech please? or are we denied that now too?

Austin Heffernan What would you call it other than "historic?" Don Jones is an apparent idiot that should have known better to post what he posted considering what his team just went through. Especially after the Fins no doubt had several meetings on the subject.

Austin Heffernan
Austin Heffernan

It's amazing because he tweeted one word: "horrible". He could've easily meant that it was horrible that it was receiving so much coverage because we live in a society where homosexuals are an accepted group and have been for many years. Since sports are so behind on diversity of sexual orientation, it became a "historic" draft pick. That is pathetic to me and it's pathetic that Don Jones had to give MORE money to one of our country's biggest cash cows

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Freedom of speech is NOT freedom from consequence and your job is NOT protected. All these people that rant for freedom of speech need to get out a book and learn what they hell they are "defending." The ignorant seem to thing that Freedom of Speech means "I get to say whatever I want, whenever I want, to whoever I want and nobody can punish me in any way." Damn morons.
