Downtown Boat Slip Becomes Frontrunner for MLS Stadium Site With Mayors' Support

Bye-bye, PortMiami stadium plans.
So much for a soccer stadium at PortMiami. A plan to fill in a boat slip right next to AmericanAirlines Arena now appears to be the favorite among shareholders for Miami's Major League Soccer franchise.

City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez joined forces today to officially recommend the site, and the proposed David Beckham-owned team seems to be on board.

Here's a statement from the Miami team:

"Miami Beckham United appreciates the vision and leadership that Mayors Gimenez and Regalado have demonstrated in identifying the best possible site for an MLS soccer venue. Both Mayors are in agreement that downtown Miami and soccer are a perfect match. Expanding Museum Park with the addition of the FEC slip and Parcel B will complete the vision of a continuous downtown waterfront anchored by world-class museums and a world-class soccer park. We look forward to working with the Mayors to make our case to their respective Commissions and the community over the coming months. Our collective goal is clear: Miami Beckham United will deliver a park and soccer venue that will make Miami proud."

The plan was originally suggested by Gimenez, and Beckham later replied that the idea would "be great."

Regalado's support is needed because the city controls the boat slip (which, obviously, would need to be filled in) and the county controls a plot of land behind AAA called "Parcel B," which would also be needed for the construction. With Regalado on board, it's now just a matter of courting support from the public and the city and county commissions.

The plan will head to Miami residents as a ballot referendum in November.

Some residents and office workers in downtown aren't quite enthusiastic about the idea. Apparently, people who bought property in a quickly expanding downtown urban hub are upset that, well, they live and work in a quickly expanding downtown urban hub.

"This will destroy the only small part of oceanfront park, a park which isn't even finished yet, and create an eyesore of another stadium beside the AA Arena," reads a petition that currently has just 350 signatures. "We the residents of the surrounding area would lose our view, and access to our building would be compromised by bringing 25,000 people's cars to the area. Traffic is already a huge challenge during concert and HEAT game events, and this would create tremendous gridlock."

worst idea ever...live across the street from AAA stadium...already crazy when there is a Miami Heat game...nightmare to try and go out to the grocery store during a game now...we have a perfectly good stadium that is hardly used now that tax dollars were spent on...let them play at the Marlins stadium...it amazes me how people who do not live in this area feel its a great idea...as a member of our board of directors I will fight till the end to make sure this does not happen...so disappointed with our mayor...already no place to take our dogs for a walk because of the new museum, science center and now the new stadium...even NYC has green areas they call a park...just another way for a rich soccer player to become more famous

Like the idea of football (soccer) in Miami but not sure that downtown is the location for it especially in that location for two reasons. 1) Two stadiums side by side in that tiny location is a bad idea. 2) Removing our bay is just another really bad idea, who does that? Soon downtown will be overly crowded....two stadiums, museums, Bayside, Bayfront Park, Condos and lets not forget about the palatial Genting group project soon to rise where the Herald building now stands. We need some room to breathe.

It's a stupid idea. It's an expansion team. First season every. Use the baseball stadium for now

Put it in Doral where all the South Americans live, have the team foot the entire bill, and no tax incentives.

There are people commenting and don't know what the fuck they are typing. MIAMI IS NOW HOME TO SOUTH AMERICANS. COLOMBIANS, ARGENTINES, BRASILIANS, CHILEANS, ECUADORIANS, PEOPLE WHO LOVE FÚTBOL. THE STADIUM IS A GREAT IDEA NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP. ALSO, IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT TAX PAYER MONEY WRITE YOUR CONCERN OR COMPLAIN TO THE CITY AND GOOD LUCK!

No this area is the LAST natural view of the bay...BIG MONEY and ugly unsightly new buildings have ruined the rest. We need to save what we have left. They can put soccer some place else...

Absolutely NOT! Put it in Homestead where all the soccer fans live. Not downtown where we already have too many empty stadiums.

Use the Baseball Stadium as a start. Who knows if the soccer team will be a success. In the past, we have had franchises that did not make it - for example the Miami Sol.

NO, I don't understand how two stadiums right next to each other is a good idea. I live across the street and think it will look hideous. There are better spots I don't understand the fixation on this spot. It will kill the Arts vibe that is being created in Museum Park. NOOOOOOOOOOOO

I guess um can't fill a stadium like they used to ? Maybe closer to old OB location and more fans show ?

Btw, canes need more than 25k seats ? The old orange bowl had 72k seats, like Sun Life.

Definitely making certain these places won't ever get the Dolphins ? Not enough seating capacity.

No, first the city axes the original plan for Museum Park with its grand bamboo gardens, now they're doing away with the AA marina plan! Unacceptable.

So, the County is actively looking for a site for a private venture to then offer them a deal on  taxpayers' money?

And why a stadium needs waterviews?

Offer them to play for free in Marlins stadium.  We are already paying for it, anyways.
