Dwyane Wade Has the Most Misspelled Name in All of Sports

There are people in sports with names like Isaako Aaitui (a Dolphins tackle), Thabo Sefolosha (Oklahoma City Thunder guard), and Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla (a Boston Bruins right wing), yet it's Dwyane Wade's little ten-letter name that is spelled incorrectly most often.

The Wall Street Journal compiled a list of athletes whose names were misspelled the most frequently in newspapers and online articles. Wade came out on top, with his name butchered a whopping 4.3 percent of the time.

As you might guess, the mistake is almost always made by writers using the more commonly used spelling "Dwayne."

Of the 142,599 articles Wade was mentioned in, 6,480 misspelled his name.

Miikka Kiprusoff, a former NHL goalie, came in second with his name wrong 3.2 percent of the time. Most often, writers leave out the second "i" in his first name.

It's not that hard to figure out why journalists often misspell Wade's name more than others. When they come across an insanely long and hard-to-spell last name, they're more likely to copy-and-paste it into the article from a reliable source.

Wade's first name registers as pretty common when it's spoken, and it's likely writers don't think to question the spelling, let alone look it up, as often. It's also possible that overzealous autocorrect software changes the name to the more common spelling without the writer realizing it.

My first week writing for this very blog, I misspelled Wade's first name in a headline. A then-prominent columnist from another paper called my editor to point it out, and it suffices to say I have never again misspelled that name. Lots of other words, sure. Quite possibly some in this article. Even, somehow, my own last name at least once a year. But never "Dwyane."

It's distinctive...it would follow that, if like former teammate Alonzo Mourning, he had a school or public building named after him, the sign artist could misspell his name.

Dwyane Wade’s Grandma Botched Spelling of His Name

.In an interview with Esquire magazine, D-Wade talks about his name..He says.. “I have no idea. I’m a junior — I got that name from my father. I asked him — my grandma said that’s how she felt it was spelled. There you go.” I feel much better now knowing it was simply a misspelling..Truth be told,
