Mark Cuban Is a Bigger Bigot Than Donald Sterling

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke goes after Mark Cuban.

Let me get this straight. Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is secretly recorded making bigoted comments about African-Americans, and he's banned from the National Basketball Association for life. But his buddy and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban admits he's a bigot during an on-camera interview, and now African-American sports pundits such as Stephen A. Smith are praising him for being honest.

What the hell?

See also: Mark Cuban Apologizes to Trayvon Martin's Family for "Black Kid in a Hoodie" Comment

Cuban shouldn't get a pass for admitting he is an ignorant elitist. During an interview at a Nashville business conference last week, Cuban said, "If I see a black kid in a hoodie and it's late at night, I'm walking to the other side of the street. And if on that side of the street, there's a guy that has tattoos all over his face -- white guy, bald head, tattoos everywhere -- I'm walking back to the other side of the street."

He also said bigotry can't be kept out of the NBA. "There's no law against stupid," Cuban said. "I'm the one guy who says don't force the stupid people to be quiet. I want to know who the morons are."

I guess Cuban doesn't know he is one of the stupid people. At least he's acknowledging his hypocrisy. In 2009, he praised Sterling in ESPN The Magazine: "I like Donald. He plays by his own rules." But when NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned the Clippers owner, Cuban tweeted, "I agree 100% with Commissioner Silver's findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling."

Soon after Cuban's interview was published, he was on Twitter again, apologizing to the family of Trayvon Martin, the Miami Gardens teenager killed because he was wearing a hoodie late one rainy night. Yet Cuban stood by the substance of his interview. Then you have Smith, playing the role of house Negro on ESPN, defending Cuban.

"I took no issue whatsoever with what Mark Cuban said... not only because he was forthright, very candid, and honest... but also he happens to be correct," Smith said on his show, First Take.

Smith basically believes it's OK for a rich white man to admit he doesn't trust black people or dudes who look like Miami Heat player and tattoo freak Chris "Birdman" Andersen. In Cuban's world, if he saw one of the black players on the Dallas Mavericks wearing a hoodie in his neighborhood, he would walk across the street.

Cuban is celebrated for publicly declaring his bigotry. But his friend Sterling gets the boot because he got caught on tape being a racist. Cuban gets away with it because he's media-friendly and tries to come off as a regular guy, wearing T-shirts and jeans to basketball games. The truth is Cuban is an asshole just like Sterling.

Let me put it like this Luther, White peoples racism could best be defined as not wanting to see a Black Man have anything substantial.  It's more jealousy than

racism. Formerly Slaves, Blacks were introduced into the education system as savages from Africa, who needed to be redeemed. That attitude was there when

I was 14 years old and it exist today. Africans were seen as no more than working cattle and mules. For Free! How dare you.

I dont understand why black people keep complaintin abaut how they were at one time slaves. Insted they shuld be proud that they were the last slaves in history.

Mark Cuban isn't even racist. Way off base as usual for Uncle Luke in these articles, though he's had a couple that have been on point.

Will this guy ever find ANYTHING at which he is actually talented.  Keep looking, Luke.  There might be hope for you out there somewhere (though I seriously doubt it).  I have to give him credit for trying.  He is just not good at anything unless he rides on someone else's coattails.

When the New Times sheds these terribly written articles, it will become a more legitimate news source. How they can print this in the same periodical as "Death Trap" really boggles my mind.

Ridiculous article. Street smart is street smart. Call it what you want, but without it you get you assed kicked! Cuban's statements didn't compare to anything that Sterling said!

You got it 100% right. Mr. Cuban relied on the "common knowledge" that black people are inherently dangerous, especially the hoodied hoodlum ones, and it's just common sense to fear and avoid them. Or shoot them if you get the chance. And if he'd said he wouldn't hire Mexicans because "every in knows they're lazy" or allow gays to teach his children because "everyone know they're pedophiles" then this crowd would nod along in solemn agreement.

Sorry White people, you don't get to publicly rue the day you "freed" the slaves to roam the streets and claim that you're having a "dialog" about race. It's a monologue to be sure.

Mark Cuban is the worst kind of bigot--the kind who doesn't realize that his worldview was constructed by slave owners and is reinforced by the societal power that comes with being a rich white man whose station is bolstered by those who look like him. He says he doesn't want to be a hypocrite by "throwing stones" at Sterling. By all means, please keep your stones in your pocket and join Sterling when he goes and jumps in the lake.

Cuban never said anything offensive, in my view. He spoke for many and adressed the hypocrisy issue. Now, if the media wanna run with the "black kid in a hoodie" line, well...

I'm glad luke shared his opinion first of all.

I always wondered why out the gate, cuban was talking about a slippery slope, when there was no slippery slope. Had V.Stef, said she had heard him say this in private with no recording, and it was all hearsay, i might have sided with Cuban. However, when it was pretty much never disputed by Sterling himself, it was clear he said them, so why even talk about a 'slippery slope'. Of course its a slippery slope in a country that has freedom of speech, but its also clearly racist.

talking about crossing the street, thats not racist however. thats just instinctual human behaviour. If i cross the street, late at night, its because of the potential for danger, no matter the color. If a 4'5'' kid rolls by in a hoodie, he or i are not gonna cross the street(hes actually a pretty big guy, bout 6'2/3'' 230).

If the dude has some crazy swagger/looks wasted and is over 6 feet and fairly large you might think, well ill cross the street just in case, its late, and im by myself.  I'm not a huge guy and i think about stuff like that, which is just instinctual, its not racism. At a certain age, everybody knows that even if you can beat someone up, its more trouble than its worth. It could be a 5'9'' guy thats drunk or wired up on some drug, but you get older, you notice the trouble and you leave. Thats prejudice against idiots not racism against a race or nationality. pretty much everyone has that prejudice.

He used an ambiguous comment just to interject his own ego into the situation, which craves more attn. than the entire Dallas Mavericks combined. Personally as a mavs fan, i think hes cost the team games with nba refs by constantly ragging on performance. All the teams in the nba get bad treatment from time to time, but he wanted to make it only about the Mavs(and yes we did get screwed in 06, but it happens to all NBA teams at one time or another, refs arent perfect either).

Outside of Sterling(now) and Buss, very rarely does anyone know the owner of any NBA team outside of their respective city (or the team they root for if they live in another area). BUT you do know Cuban, not because his team won the 2011 title and beat the Heat (pretty badly in fact), but because of all his antics, which were generally classless and just plain dumb. Like running on the court or getting in arguments with players. Sometimes, it would be nice if he would just shut up and get good players for the Mavs and not say anything. CLearly we know thats not going to happen.

And when it comes to bedding a high maintenance/dollar gal like V Stiviani, you don't share with a dude that has aids/hiv and a track record for bedding women. I figure Sterling paid enough into Stiviani, he's entitled a fresh poa for his investment ?

Mr. Luther,

I enjoy reading the New Times regularly and have often enjoyed your articles and your music.

However,  In this situation I think you are missing the point.

Mr. Cuban may be an asshole but I wouldn't know since I don't know him personally.

In my opinion, I believe that Mr. Cuban was trying to show us that we can all learn something about tolerance and that we all make judgements.

If I see things that seem foreign or different to me I take notice. Lets say someone walks into a store with a gun.  They may just be carrying it safely or they may be a soldier or a police officer or they may be some untrained idiot who may accidentally shoot himself in the foot or me in my head.  In any case,  that awareness is a defense mechanism which we all should have.

That doesn't mean I hate the person.  They may be a great person but I should be aware.

We all know people who are a bit bigotted or rascist.  The old black man who hates white people. The guy who still says everything is gay.  The people who think all jews or latins are cheap or thieves.  I don't hate these people.  I pity them because these ideas have come from somewhere in their past experiences or lack of experience.

If these people are your relatives or friends, please try to educate them, but know that you can't change them over night.  They will need time to bring these beliefs to more enlightened state if ever.

Your comments in this article may have been to cause controversy but as a leader that resinates with people in Miami and across racial lines in this country, I believe your talents and exposure could be used better by showing us all that we may be different and even afraid of each other at times but we are all people who given the opportunity could bring us together rather than pull us apart.

I thought Kareem Abdul Jabbar spoke best on the entire subject surrounding  the Clippers owner pointing out the various sides of the situation that transpired in a manner that we could all relate to.

I didn't understand why calls were made to the black community by some to boycott Clippers games. Why was that request made to just blacks.  Shouldn't that statement have been made to everyone.  If we keep dividing ourselves from each other, how can we expect to ever come together.

Mr. Cuban was trying to show we all have it in us to hate or fear or see things differently but we also have it in us to tolerate and hopefully educate ourselves about those in our global community.

I hope that in the future you use your pulpit to help bring us together rather than tearing down those who are trying to make an honest effort even if it may not come out perfectly.  We are all human.

is this a serious article or satire? it's quite incoherent and clearly embellishes a number of facts so i hope it's meant to be funny and i just didn't get the jokes.

The message anyone should get from Cuban's interview is that when it comes to personal safety, you cross the road to avoid the greater potential for being mugged by anyone that is a stranger.

And you have to be extremely stupid not to realize that Cuban's comment goes to admit that he would also walk away from a white dude all covered in tattoos.

It's not a matter of black or white.

It's a matter of  people, no matter what the color of their skin, who project themselves in ways that are threatening or unwelcome to others.

Guess what, for most of us, better safe than sorry. If it hurts your feelings, too bad so sad.

Correction:

Trayvon Martin was NOT shot because "he was wearing a hoodie late one rainy night."

First, it was not late.

Second, he was shot because he made the poor, stupid choice of viciously attacking another human being. That other human being happened to LEGALLY carry a gun, which he LEGALLY used in self defense.

@justaguy My friend you make a great point. But while we all may have some bias, etc... but they are not all created equal.

What I mean by that is if we are in positions of power and have those feelings it can make a huge difference in the way policy, jobs, arrest, murders sentencing etc are carried out.

I agree, education is the key but until then if we are in positions of power our bias can make a difference in the lifes of those under us.

jworks64

@Exiliado Trayvon Martin was shot because the shooter thought exactly the way Mark Cuban thought and felt. He thought wrongly about someone he did not know. As safe as we may think it is, it is still wrong to judge someone based on fear or ignorance. When does a hood cause someone to be dangerous.Or even tattos for that matter. If we were to follow through on that kind of thinking people of color should always not trust (fear) the White race because of how they have treated people for years. Its not just the thinking but what we do with the thinking. And the more power we have (be it a gun or owing a team) the more responsibe we are to be with our thoughts.

The thoughts are the parent to the deed. Change our thoughts an we change our actions.

“What I know of George and his tendencies and also my opinion is that he racially profiled Trayvon Martin that night because if that had been a white kid on a cell phone, walking through our neighborhood, he wouldn’t have stayed on him the way he did and that’s a fact and I believe that in my heart,”

Wrong.

Trayvon Martin was shot because the shooter was receiving a senseless beating and feared for his life.

Not a single one of Zimmerman's  actions justify that savage attack. It is not illegal to follow and report suspicious activity to the police.

And talking about responsibility, it would be wise to stop lying. It would be wise to teach our youth what is legal and what is not. It is wise to teach our children to stay in school, away from drugs and violence and out of trouble. Making a hero out of a dead punk will not help. It will get more people killed.

@DRAKEMALLARD.0 @Exiliado

Even if that was the case, there is nothing ILLEGAL in Zimmerman's actions.

The facts remain the same.

If Martin had kept his hands to himself, he would probably be alive today. Or maybe not, considering his behavior and habits.

@DRAKEMALLARD.0 @Exiliado perhaps. But the last 13 burglaries, according to eyewitnesses and police reports, weren't committed by "white kids."

You can look that up. It's a fact.
