Miami-Dade Needs More Than a Panel to Fix Race Relations

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke explains what's wrong with race relations in Miami-Dade.

African-Americans in Miami don't get a fair shot at anything. It's sad when young black children can aspire to become president but they can forget about ever being elected mayor in their own hometown.

No one wants to address the disenfranchisement of black people here. African-American contractors still receive fewer local government contracts. And when minority firms are awarded jobs to build roads or schools, they are often just fronts used by larger companies to meet quotas. Most black politicians maintain the status quo because they can't survive without political contributions from lobbyists, developers, and organizations like the Latin Builders Association that control the process.

Meanwhile, historic black neighborhoods continue to fade away. Today, real estate interests are stretching Wynwood into Overtown, driving rents up and black people out. Soon a major developer will break ground on the Miami Worldcenter project in Park West. Yet none of the African-Americans in the neighborhood have been promised jobs or a chance to open stores in the massive project. And the Florida Department of Transportation is doing just what it has done for decades: forcing longtime residents from their homes to make way for more expressway lanes through Overtown.

People who aren't black don't want to admit the problem. They refuse to acknowledge that by ignoring it, they are perpetuating the bleak cycle.

For instance, when a teenage black girl who can't afford to go to college leaves high school, she has to enter the workforce. And if she can't land a job, she has only two options. First, she can become a dope dealer's girlfriend and get caught up in the drug game. Or she can go work at a strip club.

She'll start off as a bartender, but when she sees men raining tips on the girls performing onstage, it won't be long before she is doing pole tricks too. Next thing you know, she's getting paid for sex in the champagne room, and she's got a pimp. Her family finds out and disowns her because Mom and Dad didn't raise her to be a hooker. She has a baby, a boy. When he is a teenager, he starts selling drugs on the corner. He ends up dead after being shot over some bullshit beef with a rival dealer.

Before we can solve Miami's social ills, we all have to admit we contribute to the problems plaguing our community.

I was with Luke all the way until the black girl who can't get in to the workforce.  Are these articles real and when did Luke get a journalism degree and from where?  Memo to blacks in Miami.. get out now.  Unless you speak another language you can forget about it!

Am I the only one who sees the irony of the guy who wrote a song titled "pop that pussy" that articulates sentiments such as "I like the way you lick the champagne glass, It makes me wanna stick my dick in your ass" commenting on a girl getting a job at a strip club? And Luke, it ain't just the black girls with a H.S. degree, it's all of them.

..........................young BLACKs typically have NO LEGACY so they have to start from zero while ALL other ethnic and religious groups have their own supporting them forward

asians, jews, italians, germans, seminoles, poles, slavs, hispanic, christians, buddists,  ALL have a solid foundation as a base to go and build that second and third level on - while BLACKs can never make it out of the basement

Blacks hate blacks more than any other race, let's address that issue before we talk about getting along with anyone else.

How are blacks going to get along with anybody else when we hate each other? Until our self hate is addressed there is no coexisting with any race or ethnicity.

Miami is a very divided city where NO ONE WANTS TO MINGLE WITH ANYONE ELSE. But the issue at hand is POWER... And what makes you think that those who've earned it, despite some questionable means, will bequeath it so easily?! And to whom?!?!

Luke, what if in the middle of that ghetto, that "aspiring" or "potential" stripper finds someone who enables her to improve her grades in order to get a full scholarship and bolt when given the chance?! Whether it's "all they know" or "times is hard", 98% of that Overtown-Liberty City radius inhabitants LOVE HOW THEY LIVE AND HAVE NO INTENTION TO CHANGE (whether they profit from it or not, it's THEIR STATUS QUO!). Most developers and politicians know that, until that area from Government Center all the way to Pork & Beans is razed, them hi-rises along Biscayne Boulevard will remain 9% occupied since no one's paying top dollar 2 blocks away from Skid Row.

Uncle Luke is an idiot. This is one of the more diverse areas on the planet. Race is not an issue around here.

Luke, you are such a POS.

There's plenty of other options, Community College or Bright Futures Scholarships, for example.

But you and your ilk don't want young black people to become smart.

You want them illiterate and stupid because only that way they'll listen to the poisonous crap you want to put in their brains.

You want those girls twerking and humping the pole. After all, that's what you (used to) sing about. Such a hypocrite!

Just when I thought you couldn't be any stupider, you go ahead and write this shit.

.................LEGACY = the difference between the disenfranchised and the social climbers is LEGACY

i would never wear my pants down and a cap on backwards for one simple reason - LEGACY - i would never do anything to insult my parents or my family because i owe so much of what i have and have access to to their hard work and perseverance

young BLACK people can care less what their actions and behaviors look like in PUBLIC because they have no LEGACY or obligation to their family - in fact many have NO family

YES indeed during slavery in the 1800s the BLACK AFRICAN SLAVE family nucleus was torn apart seperated and impossible to reconcile BUT HELLO MCFLY its 2014 !

and YES, andrew, the LEGACY uncle tom espouses is hypocritical which is why the BLACK experience is so disjointed and disenfranchised and inconsistent and many many times directly attributed towards DRUG ABUSE = period
