Miami Ranked Fourth Most Dangerous Metro for Pedestrians

Between 2003 and 2012, 1,539 pedestrians died while walking along the streets of South Florida. That's more pedestrian deaths in any other major metro area except for New York and Los Angeles. So, sadly, it's not much of a surprise that Miami has been ranked the fourth most dangerous metro area for pedestrians in a new study that examines a number of factors for safety on the streets.

The rankings comes from a new report out today from Smart Growth America.

The report found that there's about 2.58 pedestrian deaths per year for every 100,000 residents in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach area. The study also found that about 1.8 percent of people commute by foot here as well.

All in all that put Miami fourth in the "Pedestrian Danger Index," only behind three other areas in Florida. The ranking considers both the number of death and the number of people walking every day. (That's why New York, for instance, doesn't make the cut despite the high number of pedestrians killed.)

Yes, the Sunshine State dominated the list. Here's the top ten:

1. Orlando-Kissimmee, FL
2. Tampa-St. Petersburg- Clearwater, FL
3. Jacksonville, FL
4. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL
5. Memphis, TN-MS-AR
6. Birmingham-Hoover, AL
7. Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX
8. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA
9. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ
10. Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord, NC-SC

Miami also came in fifth for large metro areas ranked by "percentage of traffic deaths that were pedestrians." About 23 percent of all traffic-related deaths between 2003 and 2012 here were pedestrians.

Hey,what about all the local drivers who somehow passed

the driver's test.

Passing on the right? Yes.

On the Venetian Causeway? Yes.

Never signaling? Yes.

On Alton Road? Yes.

Driving while on the phone? Yes.

On West Avenue? Yes.

Driving while texting? Yes.

On Ocean Drive? Yes.

Driving while putting on makeup? Yes.

On Collins Avenue? Yes.

And these are not the wobbly old folks or the

distracted youngsters or the out of towners.

These are local license plates, not rental plates.

So, where do you go with that issue?

This pic is in Miami Beach and the taxi drivers here are IN SANE. I really hate them, they are so careless is like they don't give a F if they cause an accident. Be careful, they will run you over you whether your walking or driving.

...............maybe it's the combinations of wobbly old folks and distracted youngsters mixed into it with out-of-town visitors who don't know their way around town and either walking or driving - there is friction

the other factor i think is odd to mention but the conditions are almost always OPTIMAL so there is no margin for error required - until its too late - certainly anyone who has experience driving on icy or snowy roads up and down hills and over black ice conditions has a certain hesitancy in following to close and on-egg-shells caution while proceeding

and down here someone will try to pass you going through a CAR WASH

The pedestrians are mentally challenged here especially the one's in miami beach booty shorts and a big miami purse.

A good part is to blame the pedestrians. As much as people have no clue how to drive in Miami, the pedestrians have no clue how to cross the street. I think a chicken can cross the street better then most people.

Yeah my girlfriend got hit by a car 2 weeks ago in Tampa. I've been hit once in South Beach, and a few close calls on the same street. People can't drive here. All these people come from 3rd world countries and don't know shit. Add the rude fucked up attitudes and yeah people are gonna get hit.

No problem, just increase DecoBike.  Change the pedestrian deaths to bicycle deaths.

Pedestrians have the right of way. And no, a very few people cross outside crosswalks. But a lot of drivers are totally inconsiderate and a-holes.

its all these fucken cubans that dont know how to drive for shit...hey miami remember: PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY...Always !

Millie Santana

It's only dangerous because people refuse to use the crosswalks and in most cases they just walk right in front of the incoming traffic when the light is clearly green and they do not use their better judgement. I see this happen all the time. Common sense is a survival skill!

Really Craig? That's why we have the deadliest roads because of design? Please stay in Washington. You have found your home with a governmental answer like that. Your reasoning is flawed because the majority of the folks being hit are hit and run victims. That means the folks that hit them are irresponsible criminals who hit these folks without concern for their health or safety, not distracted pedestrians on poorly designed roads.

Craig Chester

It's less about bad drivers (though there are plenty) and more about bad road design. Wide, fast roads without enough time to cross or crosswalks are deadly for people out walking - especially older pedestrians. It's not that the entire Sunbelt has bad drivers, it's just we have unsafe roads that only account for speeding cars in their design and not people walking/biking. This is especially damaging to the health and economic potential of our more urban areas.

I got hit by a dumbass while I crossed at an intersection. The cars were lined up properly in both sides of the intersection as there was a red light. Jackass decided to break out from behind the line and make his own lane to try and speed up to the turning lane and threw me thirty feet. Then he gets out of the car and yells at me for being in his way. Cop looked the other way when I punched him in the mouth

With all these hit and runs I'm surprised we're not #1.

While Riding bike or running you have to assume that every car is trying to run you over.. Especially on corners and intersections. Gotta stay alert at all times!

I used to run through Brickell. Had some close calls with drivers not paying attention. Awful.

Nobody fucking signals!  You think it's a trivial thing, but not signaling turns kills.  Pedestrians can't tell that you're about to turn into their trajectory.  Use your blinker!

................simply too many competing factors in too little space

too many cars, too many people, too many multiple-uses for limited street access = period

add in too little patience on everyone's part and there you have the reasons for what is happeneing

PS: i didn't think you could tell a rental car from a privately owned car by the license plate anymore
