That Giant SkyRise Miami Thing Could Actually Break Ground by Next Month

Categories: Unreal Estate

When we first saw plans for the oddly R-shaped SkyRise Miami, we filed it away with all the other ostentatious development plans that never made it past the concept stage. Well, SkyRise could actually break ground by next month pending a vote by Miami commissioners.

Though, the structure would still need to be approved by voters in a referendum to be held either in August or November.

Championed by developer Jeff Berkowitz, the idea behind SkyRise is to give Miami a signature observation tower somewhat akin to Paris' Eiffel Tower and Seattle's Space Needle. The 990-foot structure would sprout from land behind Bayside Marketplace and include a restaurant, ballroom, and two amusements (a Tower of Terror-like ride and a bungee-jumping feature).

According to exMiami, however, developers have until June 12 to begin construction before the FAA clearance to build the megastructure ends. Before that, the Miami Commission would need to pass a resolution approving a deal that would see Bayfront sublease the space, and voters would get the final say in either August's primary election or November's general election.

Of course, the tower's design, meant to evoke a wave pointing toward Latin America, has been divisive, as has the potential loss of revenue that could be generated from other options for the land.

The tower would also become Miami's tallest structure, dwarfing the Four Seasons Tower by more than 120 feet. (However, plans for the 1,049-foot Bayfront Plaza have also been approved but have been long delayed.)

An entire city full of dicks, a building that looks like one seems long overdue.

Why would Miami want to be forever known for a giant robot penis?  #robotpenis

Looks weird. You mean to tell me that a group of people actually got together and agreed that that thing actually looks good?

The same negativity was said about the Eiffel Tower back when it was built. My answer "beautiful".

That's not progressive buy very cheesy and out of date. It's being built by the guy who built Dadeland Station and the shops at 5th and Alton. Hardly a visionary urban planner in anyone's book. And he puts Britto EVERYWHERE so go figure.

..................so with ALL these magnificent luxury high-rise units coming on line and paying real estate taxes on these premium units   how come the public school system sucks ! ? !

i realize the cops are corrupt as are the politicians who rely on those "second" income sources ............ BUT how come elementary school teachers and thirty year experienced maintinence workers get paid minimum wage and can't afford the union sponsored health care plan ?

has anyone ever listened in on a miami-dade school board meeting broadcast ?

where the heck is all the real estate taxes collected on these premium unit going ?

JHC, it looks like a NASA spacecraft launch platform or a drilling rig. Vote this thing down Miami-- if it does go up, in the end, mother nature will reclaim all low coastal waterways in about 500-600 years-- it will be a different planet.

....................why not rehabilitate and remediate the mistakes and decay currently existing residential property instead of continually pouring new and ignoring and forsaking the existing ?

the only trace of SOBE not readily found elsewhere is its ART DECO,  that is heralded to this day,  (i agree not all of it is salvageable or even historic or even good) , BUT just like NAWLINs and MONTREAL and many many other international cities have a special sauce, new is not special and certtainly is no guarantee to be self-sustaining

new may be next seasons fad but it may soon fade

MIAMI is poor and cannot afford much more new "growth and attractions" that are a costly and expensive drain to its limited resources

spending catclysmic money is not in itself "more progressive"

......................very good question because you have to ask yourself .............IF all those luxury high-rise condo units already built and on-line, how come MIAMI-DADE  is so poor ?

i am old enough to remember when the first NY STATE LOTTERY in 1967 was supposed to fund public school education with so much SURPLUS money the girls and boys bathrooms should have gold-plated fixtures today in 2014 - well guess what ? ...............those schools today are delapidated buildings and underpaid educators and over paid administrators and some systems even dangerous for children to attend with less books and classroom resources and teacher face time per pupil than back in the 1950s
