Miami Police to Hold News Conference to "Address" Critical Mass

Update: At the conference, Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa says he believes Critical Mass has become a "critical mess."

It may be the end of the era for Critical Mass Miami. City of Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa has called a news conference for tomorrow at 10 a.m., saying in a statement, "It is critical to address Critical Mass."

See also: Critical Mass: It's Time for Miami Police and Motorists to Respect Bike Riders

"Chief Orosa will display graphic images of cyclists in Miami's jurisdiction and highlight specific concerns related to the practice of this movement through the streets of the city," the release continues.

There's not a lot of information other than that.

The bike ride takes place every last Friday of the month and begins at Government Center. For legal reasons, organizers claim the events are spontaneous celebrations and not meant as protest rides. Rydel Deed -- the founder of The Miami Bike Scene, a site that posts the Critical Mass routes -- tells Riptide he had not heard about the news conference and had no information about what measures the police would announce.

Eric Madrid, another Critical Mass regular, said he has been promoting a block party this week for the Magic City Bicycle Collective and wondered if the planned party -- scheduled for this Saturday -- played any role in the chief's timing.

"I was on talk radio discussing the party early this morning," he said. "Hopefully there's no connection there but that's all I could think when I heard about this."

The ride in Miami has become particularly popular. Even celebrities such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Gabrielle Union have participated. But the event might become a victim of its own success.

Relations between police and riders have become less friendly over the past year.

Miami Police have had an ambivalent stance on the ride, though other local cities through which the ride occasionally runs, including Miami Beach and Coral Gables, have mostly embraced the event.

This has become your typical Miami event period!  Lebron, Wade, and Gabrielle Union have been seen in the ride.... People drinking while riding, no helmets, riding all over the streets with impunity... THE PARTY SEEN....

I don't have a problem with Cyclist or Critical Mass as it was originally intended. I have a problem with MIAMI Critical Mass as it has become a party more so than a movement of Civil disobedience and bike awareness.

However, it has become dangerous as most things are taken to the extreme in Miami.

I have been saying this for the longest time! It's only a matter of time before Critical Mass becomes Critical Mass CASUALTIES!

Critical Mass is crucial to the awareness of drivers that they must share the road with bicyclists and it is a well meaning event. However, Its about time the police stepped in an put some order and safety into Critical Mass.

The law says a bicycle and vehicle must SHARE the road so long as they follow all rules of traffic.

Critical Mass was intended a a sort of PASSIVE civil disobedience to create awareness of bicyclists. However, in Miami, it has becaome, as most things, a FAD and also an opportunity for disaster.

Adults and Children alike NOT wearing their legally required helmets, people taking over ALL LANES of a street even riding on sidewalks, ILLEGALLY blocking traffic and causing major traffic tie ups.

REGULATE but don't ELIMINATE Miami Critical Mass !!!!

Why don't the organizers of CM know the laws and share this info with other members? They should take responsibility for their group and make sure that everyone is aware of how they should behave before anyone gets together. Simple.

Let's take Biscayne Blvd. to Brickel and stop at every light, the Mass will shut down those roads all night instead of 45 minutes.

Typical Miami Police. All this requires them to actually work and think in real time and not just show up after the fact and try and talk you out of making some kind of report.

People need to have more respect for cyclists. Fat grumpy people need to get off their car and try riding a bike for once to work. I don't see the big deal. This would Only happen in Miami smh

Critical mass its no big secret is an exercise in people power. The power of the people to take to the streets of their city. Its an exercise in the power of mass protest. I'm not sure many who participate here in Miami are even aware of this. In other cities the participants are well aware of its purpose. Here in Miami its just a roving party. I expect the police are aware and will be coming down hard on bikers the next time they ride in mass..

I live in midtown and I have seen many CM participants riding with beer in their hands and when you try to cross they get nuts and yell and block you! I have a 3 months old baby and I cannot be stuck for an hour when he is sick in the car! These people are plain rude and obnoxious and cause more harm to community than good.

@ SF CM/SJ BP the motorcycle police block the intersections to prevent anyone running red lights and to enforce traffic laws for impatient drivers who think cyclists are the same as traffic cones. Sure is annoying when they get stuck under your car and you have to use reverse to get them out of there and continue on your way like nothing happened.

The police even ticket some riders for running red lights and enforce that the group obey the lights in certain intersections. And to people saying they'll run a cyclist down to accomplish something meaningful, you want freedom to climb into a metal box and lord over other road users? Have fun sitting in your casket while we enjoy your city.

Honestly the Police made it annoying on purpose. Blocking traffic during rush hour of course is going to make people annoyed. I got pissed off one time. Let them fen for themselves. And do not do it on a Friday critical mass!!!

Critical mass assholes... you do it to protest on purpose.. share the road? Yeah right... ride on the side of the road like normal cyclists do. If not I will run your asses over! Stop call the police and not even get a ticket... cyclists do not have the right of way! Motor vehicles do. Yall just want to act like your supporting some cause ... your not. You want to ride in the street? Take your asses to US 27 and krome Avenue. .. not downtown. I hate critical mass.

Andrea, are you aware that probably 98% of the people that attend this chaos actually put their bikes on/in their cars and drive down there?

Stetson Glines

Sunday early mornings on a defined and well-noticed route could relieve much of the congestion and unfairness to most motorists, runners, skaters, walkers.....But the laws are the laws and I support enforcement for the safety of everyone, regardless of transport modality- Miami's urban environment can support Multi-modal transport for all of us but none of us should be allowed to abridge the rights of others to free access, within the law- If that level playing field isn't enough for Critical Mass participants, then organize a bike rally, like a marathon or other community event that impacts traffic, with the approval of governing authorities, proper policing and responsible behavior aimed toward community enrichment and not conflict!

I guess CM and bikes are too progressive for Miami. Enjoy driving your gas guzzlers you lazy oil phenes.

Juan Carlos, you do have the right to ride on the street but you don't have the right to cut off cars, block traffic and create an unsafe environment for everyone else. And yes I do ride 150+ miles a week and I do respect the cars and laws.

So the event is growing and the city is looking for its cut. No surprise there.

Ánd do you know how many motorists drive and drink, hunk if a pedestrian tries to cross even when s/he has the right, and get nuts and yell and block you? Car drivers are plain rude and obnoxious in this city, and cause harm to communities. How many bicyclists do you know that have hit people and then run away? How many have they killed people with their reckless riding?

If your child gets sick in the car is not because of bikes on the road. Every time you take your 3-month-old in the car, you are endangering her. And you are like a million times more likely to be stuck for an hour in a traffic jam caused by cars than by bikes.

Get a grip!  Or even better: get a bike!!

orleans
orleans topcommenter

you are mistaken. "normal" cyclists only ride on the side for fear of cars, but as per traffic laws, cyclists have the right to a full lane.  And no, motor vehicles do not have the right of way over bikes. By being ignorant of the law you are a danger on the road.  Maybe you should take your car to Krome Avenue (?).

So then you've shut down thought, cut off all possibility of reason, and committed yourself to a violent act? I agree with you that some cyclists are very inconsiderate of drivers. I cycle myself, and I've even been pissed at how other cyclists ride! But I personally am trying to give you as much space as I possibly can, always riding either on the white line or less than a foot away from it. I see plenty of drivers pass me without having to slow down or cross over into the left lane (i.e., they can tell that they don't need to give me much extra space). I actually get annoyed when drivers slow down behind me because I know I'm giving them plenty of room to pass me without having to enter the left lane.

So you'll even run down a cyclist like me who takes up little space and pretty much agrees with you?

You miss are an idiot, when you work downtown and live in Kendall being stuck in traffic for 2 hours because of some inconsiderate assholes pretending to be a "movement" is not an option. When you have a child in daycare and need to pick them up and you work downtown being late because we need to "raise awareness" is not an option. Public transportation being what it is, not an option either. The only thing this insanity does is make drivers of "gas guzzlers" irate because we have places we need to be and now we are late, and moreover we hate cyclists a lot more. Not everyone can live in Brickell and bike to and from work some of us live in the real world, you should visit sometime.
