Rep. Joe Garcia Wants Beckham to Build Stadium in Homestead or Florida City

Beautiful Homestead,
With Museum Park out of the equation, the future location of David Beckham's soccer stadium is up in the air.

Well, Rep. Joe Garcia has a great idea. He sent a letter to the Beckham team and other local officials this week bringing up the idea of building a stadium in Homestead or Florida City, of all places. Granted, both Beckahm and MLS seem committed to building a stadium somewhere in Miami's urban core, and Homestead is, well, the exact opposite of an urban core.

"In addition to the residents of the City of Miami, these South Dade communities would help form a devoted fan base that would fuel attendance at games and contribute to a strong sense of solidarity with a with the team," writes Garcia.

Garcia's letter also indicates that State Sen. Dwight Bullard, Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace, Homestead Mayor Jeff Porter, State Rep. Kionee McGhee, and County Commissioner Denis Moss. The legislators mentioned all represent districts in the area.

The idea is worth less than the piece of paper it was printed on.

The MLS has stated that a stadium in Little Havana near Marlins Park is too far out of the urban core for their liking, and that's only like 10 to 15 minutes out of the urban core. A trip from New Times HQ in Wynwood to Homestead City Hall is about an hour drive, according to Google Maps. The trip to Florida City is about the same.

There's also the matter of fact that Miami sports teams do always count on support from Broward County residents, and it's highly unlikely they'd ever bother making that trip with great regularity.

Granted, this isn't the only odd idea being floated around. FAU contacted Bekcham's team about playing in their football stadium in Boca Raton, even as the Palm Beach County Sports Commission called it an "extreme long shot." Naked Politics notes commissioner Sally Heyman thought Sun Life Stadium would be a perfect location despite the fact it holds about four times more people that show up to an average MLS game.

So this is probably not something worth discussing. The real question: where exactly is there a large plot of land that could hold a soccer stadium left in Miami's urban core?

Homesteads a great idea... Get some traffic out of the downtown area. Put the soccer stadium and the sony park they wanna built by the zoo down south.... There's actually space there for this

You don't need waterfront property for a stadium. Nobody can see the water during the game. That is bullshit. If Beckham isn''t committed to Miami enough to find an alternate location then he would have left us anyway-with an empty waterfront stadium. There are plenty of alternate sights. Lots of people from Mexico & South American live in outh Miami-including Homestead.

Beckham and simon are going to get tired of Miami's bullshit and tell them to pound sand

The old Miami Arena lot? Yeah, that might be enough room for a parking garage for a soccer STADIUM

many of you complain about the "drive is too far" lol!!!!!! yet many of you drive the same distance for a raunchy night club to get smashed in. homestead isnt far enough for the true fan. i would imagine the parking would be a hell of lot easier than one placed in a jam packed city like downtown

Dude way too far Id rather them have the "FLORIDA MARLINS" stadium in homestead instead of having me pay for a half billion failing stadium for a crappy team. in downtown. The traffic its causing def not worth it......

This is what I love.  All these politicians and former politicians who have zero business experience and would be in the poor house if they couldn't trade in their connections for profit have all these great ideas on where the stadium should be.  What the hell does a guy who actually punched in day in and day out stadiums his entire life, an entrepreneur and a renowned developer know about stadiums and making money?

Actually not a bad Idea. Plenty of space. Easy to get too. They can build proper parking. A little far. But I think worth it. Downtown is a bad idea. Not enough space for anything.

Just build it in Key West, and enjoy the ride down.

Are you joking? It is too far away for the South Florida's population base. The best location will be Biscayne Landings development between Miami and Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood as the site has 183 acres ready for development. The stadium site needs only 25 acres plus Mr. Beckham can work out a deal with Mr. Swerdlow to develop the remaining acreage with high end retail shops, offices, hotels, and restaurants surrounding the stadium site.

People need to understand that for this team to work, they have to go all out! None of that stadium half an hour away from Downtown BS. Miami is used to either having a top of the line team or nothing. For ppl in Miami to go they need a top quality location, stadium, players, brand, etc

Wtf??? If Beckham accepts, that team won't last a season

They can use the old Miami Arena lot that is not being used and another lot in Wynwood which is booming at this time.

Homestead? Might as well leave it to Disney to have the rights. Who tha hell is gonna drive that far. There is no logic having it on Homestead, thats a dumb idea . Everyone comes to South Florida to stay in the Miami area, not only that there are two huge lots in the Downtown Area.

I drive FAR north to games. Really less than an hour from anywhere in Miami. It isn't Orlando its the same county for Gods sake. If you want to see a game bad enough you will drive. I do for all UM Games and at least traffic here isn't HELL.

Heather Rogerson

Obviously many of you haven't been to Homestead in years its 20 min from Kendall. Next to the Keys. Built up so much Hotels everywhere. Who will drive here? Thousands from around the US for NASCAR! So bad we don't leave home weekend of the races. You prefer Miami be further congested with another stadium? 1992 A HUGE spor tree s stadium was built using tax payers money. Meant for MLB spring training. They backed out because of Hurricane Andrew now it just sits hosting some minor league softball games and as a temporary police station . It is huge unused and YOU paid for it. So make him buy it!

Idiotic politicians that don't know anything about the sport. How the hell are you going for to tell Beckham to goto little Havana. This is pathetic and so are all the people hating on it. Another great boost to our economy

I don't understand why people are causing such a negative vibe over this. This Stadium will be nothing but positive for Miami where ever they put it.

They should buy the Magic City Casino property and make their dream happen there in the midst of what could be a vibrant fan base.

Lots of Mexicans in Homestead. They love soccer. Bring in Chicharrito and they'll sell out every game.

surely you jest.  I love homestead (I'm serious, I do) and I like Garcia (I really do) but if people don't like going to SunLife for football who the hell is going to drive to Homestead for soccer?  This is by far the stupidest thing I've ever heard
