Charlie Crist Lays Out His Very Liberal First-Day Plans
A lack of enthusiasm from rank-and-file Democrats over former Republican Charlie Crist's gubernatorial campaign may be taking its toll in reason polls. So perhaps it's not a surprise that Crist has unveiled a list of liberal-pleasing first day promises he hopes to enact upon inauguration.
These are steps Crist would enact through executive order so they wouldn't need to pass the legislature, and they touch on everything from the minimum wage to gay rights.
Here, in Crist's words, are the five executive orders he has termed "the first day of fairness":
Bring Back Open, Honest, and Transparent Government. I'll reverse Rick Scott's closed records policies -- because you deserve to know that your government is working for you.
Though, the state's open record laws affect all Floridians, they're of particular concern in the day-to-day life of one group in particularly: journalists. Rick Scott's insistence on tightening and getting around Sunshine Laws have left him with a chilly relationship with he press. Crist clearly wants to make amends.
Raise the Minimum Wage for State Contractors. I'll raise the wage to $10.10 for all contractors doing business with state agencies that report to the governor's office. This is a vital step to help Florida families.
Crist also stands behind President Obama's efforts to raise the national minimum wage to $10.10 for all workers.
Fight for Equal Pay. Women in Florida make 83 cents for every dollar a man makes. That's just not fair. I'll do what I can to change that for state contractors.
Like the minimum wage issue, this would only apply to state contractors, but it's a signal of wider policy he hopes to enact.
Ensure Florida Dollars Go to Florida Businesses. Our state contracts should go to Floridians. I'll sign an order directing agencies to, whenever possible and legal, keep our business in-state, and instructing contractors to make every attempt to hire Floridians.
It'll be interesting to see how he actually does this, but everyone likes the promise of keeping jobs local.
Prevent Discrimination Against LGBT Workers. I'll prohibit any form of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity within the state agencies or its contractors -- because all Floridians should be equal in the eyes of the law.
This an interesting sign that Crist's LGBT policies would be inclusive of transgender individuals, which is actually more inclusive of many establishment Democrats.
Big picture, there's nothing revolutionary or super controversial here, but all-in-all a set of policies near and dear to those of bleeding hearts.
