Heat Fans Need to Stop Thanking LeBron and Start Giving Dwyane Wade Some Credit

LeBron Wade rockets.jpg
I'll never forget how regretful I was. In 1993, just six days shy of my 14th birthday, Michael Jordan abruptly announced his retirement from the NBA. I promised myself if he ever came back, I would watch every game intently and appreciate him for what he was -- a once-in-a-lifetime athlete. In 1995, Jordan returned to the NBA, and I got the chance to follow through on my promise. I made a point to watch every Heat game as well as every minute Jordan played, even if it meant recording Bulls games broadcast on WGN on a VHS tape and then watching them the next day after school while I did my homework. I didn't want to miss a moment of his greatness.

I tell this story because today I feel like some Miami Heat fans need to refocus, step back, and appreciate what matters.

I've read a thousand columns about LeBron James' departure from the Miami Heat. I've seen a million tweets containing the hashtag "#ThankYouLeBron." I've seen fans express how ecstatic they are to see Chris Bosh remain with the Miami Heat.

What I haven't seen is enough space dedicated to thanking Dwyane Wade for making it all possible. So I figured I might carve out a little myself. After all, when you trace back everything the Miami Heat was able to accomplish these past four years, it all leads back to the greatest player in the history of the franchise. None of it happens without Dwyane Wade.

So thank you, Dwyane Wade, for always believing in Pat Riley, the Miami Heat, and the fans. In a world where it seems like every star player is hell-bent on being the odds-on favorite NEXT YEAR, you've always shown you are committed to the bigger picture; no matter how pie-in-the-sky it may have seemed, you've always been patient with us and our team.

You're the reason I can dream of taking my son to a Heat game in ten years and pointing up to the championship banners in the rafters with pride. Somewhere a 10-year-old playing basketball will one day be on my Miami Heat and look up every game at what you accomplished. Hell, I hope the guy will be YOUR son. A guy can dream.

Think we will really compete for Eastern Division. We might be even better. Everybody can play their game. Bosh will be a monster with the supporting group

Great commentary. I agree. For those that believe it was all about Lebron, if he could have won the championship by himself he would have done so in Cleveland without ever leaving. SO, like most things in life, it was truly TEAM work that allowed them to do what they did. I know in society we're conditioned to believe it was the ONE but it's always a TEAM effort.

There are many delights in their world and others as well, we must remember this. All is vanity.

Don't get me wrong I love LeBron but DWade is my boo for life. Everyone keep saying thanks to LeBron for brining us to 4 nba finals and 2 rings, well if that was possible it was because of the whole team not just one player. He couldn't win it in Cleveland so he came to a team with better players and coaching staff that elevated his game more was why we won 2 out of 4. Move on people. Jesus is my real King!

My husband and I were season ticket holders for many years. We went to all of the playoff games and final games during that time but the greatest time we ever had was when we got to meet Dwyane Wade in person. I think he is an incredible athlete and a fantastic inspiration to others. He gave up so much for the Heat and I wish everyone could appreciate all he has done. I feel he was cheated by LeBron since LeBron allowed him to opt out knowing he wasn't coming back to the Heat. Both he and Bosh had to take a step back to make room for LeBron and his ego. I hope he and the Heat have a killer year. Go Heat!!!

When Lebron came to the Heat i knew it was gonna temporary. That is why i never bought his jersey, i bought Wades because he was and is top player for the Miami Heat. No matter who they bring to our team Go Heat.

Yeah let's build a nice team & make it our goal to make sure we eliminate LeBron and Cavs every year from the playoffs.

Wade is actually Miami's problem. Miami is going to be overpaying Wade for years, keeping the Heat mediocre to terrible. That is why Lebron left. Wade deserves the loyalty of the Heat and the fans, but just like with Kobe, his contact is going to kill the Heat for years to come.

I couldn't have said it better myself.  This is EXACTLY how I've always felt about DWade (and let's not forget UD!).  He is and will always be the face of the franchise to me.  This is still Wade Country!  I will be there with my daughter the day the Miami Heat retires his jersey and we will be the proudest fans in Miami!

Thank you Lebron for the years you gave us and thank you Wade... we always give you credit. Common sense is that we thank LeBron James for being with us for a few years. If Wade was the one leaving we would be thanking him too.

To the extent that Lebron was not born to be the ceremonial figurehead of a European nation, I agree. But he is the best basketball player in the world, maybe best ever. King of basketball?

ls2014
ls2014

WADE'S contract? He doesn even have one yet. He opted out to SACRIFICE for the team to bring on top players. Unfortunately, lebrick ditched him and the team took wade's generosity to sign bosh to a max deal. Wade is the only sane person down there.

lcar686

Really Alberto? Pat Riley and all of his team mates including and especially DWade have had nothing but good things to say. Did Mickey Aronson write a nasty letter to LeBron calling him a traitor and a coward? I must have missed that.

lcar686
lcar686

LeBron never won a ring without Dwyane and lets wait and see if he ever wins again.

ls2014
ls2014

I assume this is a joke? 2-for-5 in finals including the 2011 embarrassment while wade carried the heat and then the cramp in game 1 this year? Had LEBRON'S health not let the heat down, they would have been up 2-0 on the spurs and it's a whole different series. Lebron blew 2011 and he blew 2014. Wade also taking another pay cut now for lebron. Lebron is the most overrated player in history.

FatHand
FatHand

@ls2014 Did you know Lebron actually has a better shooting percentage in the playoffs for his career than in the regular season?

ls2014
ls2014

I'm not sure how that helps your case for Lebron as maybe best ever in any significant way?? I don't know what his shooting percentage was in 2011 when they lost to the Mavs, but I do know that he averaged 17 ppg in the finals and was the FOURTH leading scorer in that series behind Dirk, Wade and JASON TERRY who was 34 years old. His drop off to 17 ppg in the finals from his regular season scoring average of 27 was the LARGEST ever. Since he appeared to be healthy, that makes that the greatest choke job ever....not sure the greatest player ever can also have the greatest choke ever. Wade averaged 27/8/6 that series and CARRIED Lebron. Come to think of it, Bosh also did his job in 2011 chipping in 19/7 in the finals. Unfortunately, Lebrick blew it. And his cramp this year also cost them the finals. King???? Don't think so.
