Liberty City Violence Is Like Iraq

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke finds parallels between inner city violence and wars abroad.

The violent conflict in Iraq and the street violence in Liberty City share a common, disturbing theme: Governments in both places have systematically disenfranchised a class of citizens to the point where they have nothing to live for. When that happens, people become all about survival. They develop a "kill or be killed" personality.

And that's why we experienced another tragedy in Liberty City when last week unknown gunmen with assault rifles sprayed a crowd gathered in front of an apartment in the Pork 'n' Beans projects. After the smoke cleared, two young men were dead and another seven victims were seriously injured.

It's a scene that plays out every day in predominantly African-American neighborhoods across America. This is happening from Miami Gardens to Detroit to Compton. In Iraq, rebel factions fight over control of the towns. In Afghanistan, the Taliban is protecting its opium fields. In Liberty City, African-American drug dealers battle for control of the best dope holes.

The difference is that Liberty City is part of the United States, where our government, from the local to the federal level, is supposed to provide everyone with opportunities for a brighter future. Black neighborhoods are in a perpetual state of self-destruction because they get stuck with the worst schools, the highest unemployment rates, and the lowest number of government contracts.

Instead of spending billions of dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan, how about addressing the terror war in America's inner cities? It's unacceptable that black people can't live and thrive in their own neighborhoods. Mayors in every major city suffering from inner city gun violence need to provide things like more trade schools, more contracts for black contractors, and making sure public construction projects built in predominantly black neighborhoods employ 80 percent of its workforce from those areas.

Giving people people pride in their community goes a long way to erasing their apathy and despair. Liberty City will stop being like Iraq when everyone in Miami -- white, Hispanic, and black -- comes together to create opportunities for the disenfranchised.

I am a white guy working as a Big Brother to a pre-teen Black child.

When I talk to his older friends, they all say the same thing:

They don't want to work for a White Man or be subordinate in the White Man world. They don't like to admit it publicly, because they are aware it has some racist overtones, but privately when they feel vulnerable, they will say it to me.

And I don't get mad at them for saying it.

And you know what? I understand their point of view.

I might not totally agree with it, but I do understand it, and I have a lot of sympathy.

Since Black successful men are not giving opportunities away, the kids prefer to start their own businesses. But they have no capital or developed ideas due to lack of education. So organized (or disorganized) crime is an accessible choice.

And for those who say they are breaking the law, we have to remember who is our enemy here? Is it not the government who is guilty of a stupid drug war and incarcerating a higher proportion of Blacks? So, if the Government is the enemy, and if many of them refuse to work for the white man, well... we are kind of stuck in limbo. The key is formal education and self-education. With education you are not obliged to work for the white man, you could start your own business. It's just some of them prefer the money right away instead of investing time and effort in education when they see all around them reminders that formal education is not the way to go.

Luke I have to disagree with you on this one. Your comparison of Liberty City to an actual war zone is absolutely BS!!! As an African - American combat veteran I take great offense to comparing a drug infested criminal area to a combat zone where daily we are reminded of how our men and women in uniform are losing their lives in defense of our national interests. I agree the Liberty City shooting was tragic and underscores the senseless violence that plagues our urban cities, however to compare it to a combat zone where our patriotic men and women who by the way do and did the right thing by serving in our military is very egregious and disturbing. I am a product of the inner city and I had/have nothing but utter contempt for those who "claim" to be thugs and "hood soldiers". A soldier protects his or her "hood" not destroy it!!! To further my point policing begins from within!!! If these so called civic, religious, community leaders and organizations banded and worked together they could end the drug selling and violence overnight. However, all they seem to want to do is have their 15 minutes of fame by playing up to reporters for sound bytes. OK so here are some simple and practical solutions for the Liberty City, Overtown, Miami Gardens and Little Haiti areas to rid themselves of the parasites who prey on their communities. 1. If every church, mosque, and temple would set aside their religious differences and agree to work together for a common cause. 2. Set up weekly if not daily marches and  protests to bring about attention to the drug dealers. 3. Set up surveillance of known drug dealers, drug areas, and drug deals. Post them on social media site such as Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, etc. 4. Forward this footage over to law enforcement. 5. Just like in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when the National Guard went door to door marking houses for survivors, go door to door marking known drug holes. 6.Stop covering for these parasites when law enforcement comes around seeking help!!! 7. Work with law enforcement not against them!!! ( you can't put out a fire by sending the fire dep't in the other direction)!!! These are just some small but practical steps the Black community can use to rid their communities of these bottom feeders as opposed sitting around and hoping and praying that "one day" these leaches will have a change of heart or some great White/Black or Hispanic hope will come to the rescue!!!

Along the southeastern coast of the United States there is a narrow strip of land which is known to linguists and dialect geographers as the Gullah Area. This region, which includes the sea islands along the coast, extends roughly from Jacksonville, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida, and inland for about one hundred miles. Living in this area are African-American people who are descendants of the tribesmen brought to the New World during the time of the Slave Trade. These people still speak variations of the original creole language known as Gullah.

The Gullah/Geechee are African Americans who lived in the Low Country region of South Carolina and Georgia, which includes both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. Known for preserving more of their African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African American community in the U.S,  they are the descendants of the slaves who worked on the rice plantations of those two states.

It's called "gentrification."It's what happens when property value of a certain area is brought down. You listening? - Yeah. They bring the property value down. They can buy the land cheaper. Then they move the people out, raise the value and sell it at a profit.

The best way to destroy a people is to take away their ability to reproduce.

Who is it that's dying out here on these streets every night? Y'all.

- Yeah. - Young brothers like yourselves.

...........................okay here is the answer - PULL UP YOUR PANTS and straighten out your hat take the ear buds out and GET A BOOK and GO TO SCHOOL !

don't have kids UNTIL your MARRIED WITH AN EDUCATION AND A J O B

don't do DRUGS you cannot handle

so there it is - it's that simple - the IRISH, the ITALIANS, the JEWS, the ASIANS, and now the HIPANICS have all learned this (AND EACH AND EVERY GROUP has had their own disenfranchisement periods of abuse and killings and prejudice and INJUSTICE - so why can't the BLACK COMMUNITY also learn from this ?)

Instead of whining about making the government step in to throw money at the problem, why not take the charge yourself?

Get the community to stand up for itself and bring about improvement from within.  Zero tolerance for gangs or drug related bullshit.  Bring family back into the equation.  Encourage kids to look for new role models - not gold tooth wearing thugs that rap about bitches, drugs, violence, and getting arrested.

Many common attributes:

1. A complete breakdown of a structured family system.

2. Endless gobs of money thrown at them only to ask for more.

3. Pointing out one success story while refusing to look at the thousands of failures.

4. Inability to speak, or write in a proper language.

5. Zero accountability!

6. The worst role models ever. You know LUKE

7. A wardrobe that makes it impossible to get a job.

8. Pride in being arrested.

9. "Don't snitch policy"

10. Massive confusion on Father's Day!!!

.....................actually, it is very much the same, yes indeed, as both blame everyone else but themselves, and simply exist to cause trouble and destruction

in the GULLAH we see that BLACK COMMUNITY can exist and thrive within its own .............IF not drug infested

QED: BLACK youths must stay OFF drugs and get educated to become productive and employable and NOT bear children until gainfully employed and MARRIED = period

................so basically you are saying the BLACK communities should deal with the problems of their OWN MAKING before asking for more hand-outs and freebies

very interesting post,  northamericanafilia,  because i always wonder how it is that italians and germans and jews and asians and most recently hispanics have ALL been discriminated against and abused and even killed,  to be kept down,  YET ALL have perservered and "made it" while the BLACK community continues to struggle

additionally not one group was free from DRUGs,  yet all the others have overcome the scourage of DRUGs,  yet the BLACK community cannot escape the death grip of DRUG ABUSE and related medical and illegality and economic IMPACT drugs has on them - why is that ?

It's also called...BETTER THAN IT WAS! Now if you have a better solution, I'm all ears...

......................i watched the VIDEO and find it only a first step because i see it more often than not these show pieces are simply window-dressing and are unsustainable over time - attachment to a geographic area has to be organic and traditional built into a culture (see GULLAH) for it to endure the low periods of invasions to drugs and thefts and illegal activity that will negatively bring the neighborhood down

northamericanaffilia

@frankd4 Frank to be more specific of all the ethnic groups who have had to endure disenfranchisment the Black community has had it the worse. Meaning while ALL OTHER ethnic European groups experienced prosperity African - American and Native Americans experienced and continues to experience a total and complete separate and unequal system of justice. For example from the 1900's on ethnics Europeans did not have a version of the "Black Codes" which in effect reinstituted slavery, nor did they have to deal with a version of Jim Crow, unequal drug laws, Dark Alliance plot of the 80's and 90's created and implemented by the US government. So we do have enough credible evidence to stake our claim. i was merely pointing out that we need begin to accept a certain amount responsibility in this situation. However, bear in mind that White America is by no means squeaky clean in this matter. YOU WANT PROOF? OK let's go!! 1. Roger Clinton and Mena, AK drug trade. 2. Danillo Blando and the CIA drug trade. 3. Hillary Clinton and her law office money laundering from Arkansas. 4. The Clinton, Bush, Bid Laden family business deals. Now that's enough to get you going for now, but please post for more education!!!! Look very carefully at the communities that these various operations affected then and now!!! Don't skim through it read it in detail and cross reference it because I don't want to tell a LIE!!! GOD forbid!!!

.......................and YES i agree the indigenous american indians got screwed over big time by the paleface and the ONLY mitigating factor could possibly be they choose to fight a superior force than surrender under otherwise advantageous terms - thats not an excuse however for the slaughter and elimination of their entire culture and traditions in their civlized and self-sustaining societies

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

................otherwise i really don't know what else to say IF you rely on the BLAME GAME to cover up BLACK insecurity and disenfranchisement

the bigger picture is even in AFRICA a few BLACK tribal leaders take advantage of their OWN people - something i just don't see in GERMANY or FRANCE or predominantly WHITE society countries - why is that ? and historically BLACK entertainers have had very successful careers and acceptance in those countries - WHY dont' BLACK people go to countires that they can start fresh and be accepted

why stay in america if you feel unwanted ?

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

.............just for one example, the JEWS had it far "worse" because being a slave at least you are alive and have a chance but having an entire family community and culture exterminated well your dead with NO chance = period

otherwise IF being a slave in america was the only thing holding BLACKs down then why didn't they ALL migrate BACK to africa once they were freed ? Lincolns "solution" initially was to boat back ALL island heritage BLACKs to jamaica and the carribean - so why didn't they GO ?

and WHY is the NAACP heralding people like DONALD STERLING ? who's head(s) should roll at the NAACP for making those decisions ?

and what about NAWLins during KATRINA when BLACK communities were basically left to their own devices - they looted and robbed and attcked EACH OTHER ! not a white man in sight - so how is that not a basic inside look at BLACK community ? YES indeed it was despicible that no help came, but no help immediately came after andrew here in 1992 either and i didn't see the hispanic people looting and robbing each other down here - no i did not

and finally if someone wants to be RESPECTED then pull up your pants and straighten out you cap and speak english - because if you dress and act like a CLOWN that is exactly what you will become in society = period (i would NEVER disrepect my parents and my own family by dressing like a clown - so there agin is another basic breakdown of civility)
