Survey: Miami Best Urban Place to Retire, Because Duh

Miami has changed a whole lot since the days when The Golden Girls was set here, but one thing hasn't changed: it's the best big city to retire in. According to an analysis from financial planning site NerdWallet, Miami took top honors.

"With nearly 16% of its population over age 65, sunny Miami is our top place for retirees," wrote the site. "Seniors can take advantage of the city's walkable layout and many beaches while enjoying relatively low average doctor and homemaker costs. The Miami area offers several community services for the elderly, such as care planning, home care and a retired and senior volunteer program."

Yes, as we were reminded recently, Florida's population only keeps getting older on average, and Miami is no exception. 15.6 percent of the population is 65 and older. It didn't take the top spot in this factor, but it came close: only Mesa, Arizona; Henderson, Nevada; and Honolulu has an older population.

To put it in perspective, in Tampa, which came in sixth overall, only 10.9 percent of the population has reached retirement age.

Miami's (sort of controversial) Walk Score also helped -- we had the highest of all the cities in the top ten -- as did our warmer temperatures.

Of course, the ranking didn't even take into account all the fun and occasionally naughty adventures you'll assuredly get into with your slutty Southern belle landlord, naïve Midwestern roommate, and sarcastic elderly mother. Follow Miami New Times on Facebook and Twitter @MiamiNewTimes.
