The Midtown Miami Heat Mural Has Already Been Defaced

In Cleveland they burned jerseys when LeBron left. In Miami it only makes sense that instead we'd deface some LeBron James-inspired street art.

Yes, a mural of the Miami Heat that has remained on a wall in Midtown Miami since Art Basel 2010 has already been defaced. Update: "It's been fixed!"

That didn't take long.

The national media seems to be misunderstanding the fact that it took artist Serge Touissant two years to complete the mural, which just means it was tweaked and added on to over the course of two years. Street art after all is an inherently living, changing medium.

New Times profiled Touissant back in 2009, and would direct you to this particular sentence: "Today, Touissant charges about $200 for storefront murals that take him two hours to finish."

It's sad that the mural was defaced, but Touissant could be probably have it back to original shape in less than an afternoon if he wanted to.

Touissant had also completed a portrait of Barack Obama under an I-95 overpass, but was forced by the County Department of Transportation to remove it. He did, but left an outline of the original. Seems like he understands that sometimes street art is often temporary.

Update: Look, guys, someone "fixed" it:

Anyway, here's this thing we do in web publishing where we're supposed to link to related article we've previously written, and yet we feel a little worried about linking to our arts blog's piece on "nine epic Miami Heat murals."

There are a few "MORONS" in ever city, please don't blame all if Miami. Most of us James fans are Grateful for what he did for our City and we Respect his decision to go back home and continue his greatness as a person and an athlete. Best of Luck King James. I'm still a fan. .g.

heartbreak for Haitian muralist Serge Toussaint who labored long hours and invested from his own pocket to create that supreme mural for the City and Heat fans.

He brought us four finals and two championships in four years. He wants to go back home where home means more than Miami Heat basketball. He is entitled to live his life. Good luck Lebron!!!

I don't like the nasty Miami reactions. We should show a little more reserve.

One asshole or a few assholes don't represent us as a fan base or city. Now if u look back at the entirety of the Cavaliers fan base you'll see what was and still is indicative of a rotten community fan base. LeBron lived up to his contract and then some. I wish him all the best and will always remember the great Times.

It's so sad that people have no life of their own that they have to live through others. This was a job for LeBron so wherever he chooses to do his job what business is to you or anyone else to be mad about. GROW UP!

I know that an educated man like King James knows that it was an uneducated person who did such a horrible thing to that mural. We will miss you KING JAMES, best of luck and thanks for the memories. \U0001f618
