Miami Central Football Coach Receives Racial Slur-Loaded Hate Mail as Team Travels to Alabama

Tomorrow night, the Miami Central Rockets, the eighth best high school football team in the nation according to USA Today, will gear up in Hoover, Alabama, to take on the third ranked Hoover High.

Though some ugliness already hangs over the game, as Miami Central head coach Roland Smith reported receiving a hate letter filled with racial slurs from an anonymous Hoover fan.

According to Blogging Black Miami, the letter, which only included the return address of "Hoover Bucs #1," included the taunt "u f*cking n*****s" right on the envelope.

The Hoover Bucs team, by the way, is perhaps best known nationally for being featured in the MTV program Two a Days.

Central alumni president William D.C. Clark went on WQAM this morning to explain more.

"It said after we beat your [expletive] remind the Miami fans to pick up their chicken bones and red cups. It was laced with all types of expletives," he said. "It may not be how most Hoover fans think. But this is Alabama, and we're constantly reminded we are in Alabama with Confederate flags, salutes to George Wallace and that old dirty low-down South many of our parents had to endure in the 1960s. We don't take that threat or that tone very lightly."

Though, Clark went on to stress that the Hoover program is a top-notch program, and he doesn't believe that the letter is representative of their fan base.

The Miami Herald reached coach Smith at the airport, though he wouldn't elaborate on the content of the letter.

Tomorrow's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN at noon.

As a FL Native who has lived in HOOVER(yes, Hoover), I'm willing to bet an old washed up man wrote this letter. What's even nuttier, is that Hoover HS is as diverse as the U.N.;) My husband(from nyc & a minority), wouldn't raise his sons here, if it resembled some of these posts. Ignorance is everywhere, & not just in the South. I read a few wks. ago where a town (North of Orlando), had the KLAN running the PD! Hell, I don't even follow the damn team. I do however, hope the Miami team has a safe trip up, & good game. Maybe people shouldn't be so quick to throw stones, @ a whole region(that a large majority of the nation are moving to, for JOBS).

I watched part of the game (and--oh,yeah!--Miami Central handed Alabama Hoover its first loss since 2011) and noted that the Alabama team is predominantly African-American, so the racial slurs don't really make sense.

Then again, when I lived in Georgia and Alabama, I saw that the hatred for the University of Miami Hurricanes was palpable and genuine. That is to say, I don't mean the so-called "hatred" that it's become acceptable to attach to any opposing viewpoint; I mean genuine, out-and-out, bitter, festering hatred, manifested in menacing, profanity- and slur-laced snarls ground out through clenched teeth.

Deep-south college football fans--meaning Southeastern Conference fans, although Florida State fans would also fall into this category--have some very peculiar feelings about the sport. They exhibit a kind of ownership of and a kind of deep feeling of personal identification based on college football. College football championships and glory are theirs, and they quite obviously believe all who would challenge that--especially a small, private school that's not a part of the "good-old-boy" cabal, are rightful targets for all manner of malice.

Alabama is especially possessed by this phenomenon. When it lost to Auburn a few years ago, one of its fans poisoned a bunch of cherished old trees on the Auburn campus. When Alabama lost to Auburn last year, one Alabama fan shot another because, the perpetrator said, the victim had not displayed sufficient grief; and these were two adult female fans. When I moved to Alabama in 2004, the walls of the lobby of the hotel in which I initially lived were completely covered with a mural depicting Alabama's Jan. 1993 Sugar Bowl win over the Hurricanes, and Crimson Tide fans told me they watched reruns of that game every week . . . over 10 years after the game was played. Football is more than a sport--even more than a religion--in Alabama. It is the single most dominantly defining aspect of the entire state. If Birmingham got a pro team, the state of Alabama would likely not survive the ensuing identity crisis.

This isn't a surprise coming from that racist state. We know those central boys are gonna knock those hoover kids off the map, but that's none of my business.

If Alabama had the internet, this would have been a racist e-mail.

Good thing there aren't any African American kids on the Hoover team or in Alabama for that matter.

It's probably one old man(w/no life), trying to start shit.  My husband(from nyc & a minority), wouldn't raise his family here, if it was as bad as some are saying on this thread. I don't get into H.S. Ball, I only "bow" to the Tide.. You're right about it just being football. Hoover High is as diverse as the U.N., which makes this even nuttier. People can't let ONE moron's actions, make THEMSELVES act just as small minded, about a community or culture. Good Luck to Both Teams:)

Hoover does have African American players on their team..
