Miamians Get Less Than 7 Hours of Sleep; Don't Go to Bed Til Around Midnight

Ever wonder what time the average Miamian turns in for the night? Apparently, after midnight. And once in bed they get 6 hours and 43 minutes of sleep.

The data comes from the makers of UP by Jawbone, a smartphone app that tracks the users' food intake, amount of steps taken each day, and sleep schedule. Granted, users of such an app might be naturally healthier than people who wouldn't bother to download it, so maybe we're looking at a better approximation of your average health-conscious Miamians rather than all Miamians, but it's interesting data nonetheless.

In the chart below, blue represents how many people using the app are asleep in Miami at any given time. Darker blues equal more people asleep. Reds represent the number of steps taken throughout the day. Darker reds equal more movement. Simple enough, right? You can find an interactive version here.

As you can see, the majority of Miamians don't start thinking about turning in until a little after 11:30 on weekdays. Though, on weekend nights, specifically Saturdays, Miamians don't start turning down en masse until around 1 a.m.

Though, that 6 hours 43 minutes sounds low, the city with the most average sleep in the analysis, Melbourne, Australia, only gets 6 hours and 58 minutes.

You'll also notice that Miamians don't walk a lot. Seriously, that's a lot of faint pinks.

Compare that to New York City where people walk all the time, especially on weekends.
