Only 7 Percent of City of Miami Cops Actually Live in Miami

No major city police force in America employs more officers who live outside of city limits than the Miami Police Department. In fact, just 7 percent of officers in the 1,860-person police force actually live within Miami's city limits.

The data comes from FiveThirtyEight, which points out that the average large-city police force employs about 60 percent of officers who live in the city. Miami was just one of four departments where the percentage was less than 10 percent.

Several cities have some sort of residency requirements. Though, often they come with loopholes, and in some cases officers are allowed to move out of the city after a certain number of years of service.

Miami has no such requirements, and it appears that the majority of the force lives in other municipalities and suburbs in Miami-Dade and Broward County.

Breaking it down by race, FiveThirtyEight finds that zero percent of African-American cops live in the city, and just 3 percent of non-Hispanic white cops live in the city. Though, a comparatively larger but still slight 12 percent of Hispanic cops live in the city.

However, it's not such a surprise. Miami is the smallest city in America to anchor a major metropolitan area.

The City of Miami proper is also a checkered mix of areas marred by poverty and glistening high-rises condo towers where real estate sells for hundreds of dollars a square foot.

So it's not exactly a surprise that most city cops decide to live in areas of South Florida more accessible to the middle class.

In fact, the data probably says more about Miami's real estate disparity than it does our police force.

So what is the point? Is the implication that the cops are too wealthy for the poor sections of the city and too poor for the rest of the city? Is this just another factoid to spark a useless debate about where the cop live and how it effects policing attitudes?

Fact is it doesn't matter. Judging by how the MPD treats it's victims there is more pressing problems that won't be cured by having cops from inside the city limits. Think they aren't a problem? just take a camera and go film the airport, the shipping port, or the federal courthouse and see how you're treated.

So if you don't live in an area, you're not familiar with that area? Talk about a flawed argument. If you spend a minimum of 8 hours a day, a minimum of 5 days a week driving or walking around the same area, you will most assuredly be more familiar with the it then most of its residents who commute elsewhere to earn their living.

More shocking to me is less than 10% are traffic cops. Perhaps this is why there is such a sore need for enforcement.

I love it when I see their cars tooling around Broward. Who pays for that?

Police should represent the community they serve. When I was fixing up my first place in Little Havana, I was driving back to my Dad's place one night, and the cops stopped me asked what I was doing, they couldn't believe that someone in their right mind would be moving into that part of Miami, they thought it was a shithole. I asked where they lived, they both said Broward. I remember it well because I thought it was a sad indictment of the City of Miami.

The so-called "police" (i.e., uniformed government thugs) are supposed to be well acquainted with the city of their alleged jurisdiction, thus, if they reside elsewhere this is made materially more difficult, which should be to state the obvious.

Maybe if we stopped allowing them to take their city supplied cars home it might not only create an incentive for them to live closer but reduce the cost to the city.

Oh yeah...  Going to rent one of those nice 2.2's in Overtown.

HAve you considered the reality that cops do not want to worry about their families? Or the vandalism? Having to carry a gun in Publix just in case you meet up one-of-dem thugs from last month?

The City of Miami has many neighborhoods with condos and houses priced from $75,000 to $225,000. Zillow.com and Realtor.com are both able to search by zip code. Governments offer special deals to "first time home buyers" and municipal employees.

Alex Gamarra

Truth is many municipalities across the country even offer special lower rate financing for police and educators who want to purchase homes in the city the work. We just have a broken local government that only works for the developers and not all it's citizens. There are so many small ideas that could be implemented to raise revenue without constantly raising taxes. The could hire better officers by requiring certain criteria but it's all political. I have seen the mayors office and police officials go at it over budgets for the cameras and then all get in the same car and go to lunch. I know officials and their staff that do not even know where their districts begin, end or who for that matter is in charge of what. But somehow these same people keep getting elected .
