Trayvon Martin's Mom to Michael Brown's Parents: "We Will No Longer Be Ignored"

Protesters clash with police yesterday in Ferguson.
After another night of chaos in Ferguson, Missouri -- with 31 arrests and reports this morning of multiple shootings -- the nation seems no closer to coming to terms with the latest police killing of an unarmed black teenager. It wasn't that long ago that the national media had converged on Florida for the same reason, when an unarmed Miami teen named Trayvon Martin was gunned down by a wannabe neighborhood watchman.

This morning, Martin's mom, Miami resident Sybrina Fulton, has penned a wrenching letter in Time to the parents of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old whose death has sparked the Ferguson unrest. Fulton has a simple message for the Browns about their sons: "Neither of their lives shall be in vain."

The letter points out the obvious echoes between the two cases as well as the all-too-predictable path the media narrative has already taken, as pundits -- fueled by reports that Brown had recently shoplifted cigars -- speculate endlessly about whether he was a "bad kid" who somehow deserved his early death sentence.

The same happened to Trayvon Martin's family, who endured endless internet rumors that he was a "thug" or a criminal who had brought on his own death while trying to walk home to his dad's house in a Central Florida suburb.

"Facts, myths, and flat-out lies are already out there in Michael's case. Theories, regardless of how ridiculous, are being pondered by the pundits," Fulton writes. "Honor your son and his life, not the circumstances of his alleged transgressions. I have always said that Trayvon was not perfect. But no one will ever convince me that my son deserved to be stalked and murdered. No one can convince you that Michael deserved to be executed."

Worse than the character assassinations, she writes, is the fact that justice will be exceedingly difficult to find. Trayvon's killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for shooting the teen.

"Further complicating the pain and loss in this tragedy is the fact that the killer of your son is alive, known, and currently free," she writes. "In fact, he is on paid administrative leave. Your own feelings will bounce between sorrow and anger."

But Fulton says the Browns can become a force for good amid the tragedy; Fulton has started a foundation in honor of Trayvon that helps families who lose children to gun violence.

Brown's death will force change, Fulton promises:

But know this: neither of their lives shall be in vain. The galvanizations of our communities must be continued beyond the tragedies. While we fight injustice, we will also hold ourselves to an appropriate level of intelligent advocacy. If they refuse to hear us, we will make them feel us. Some will mistake that last statement as being negatively provocative. But feeling us means feeling our pain; imagining our plight as parents of slain children. We will no longer be ignored. We will bond, continue our fights for justice, and make them remember our children in an appropriate light. I would hate to think that our lawmakers and leaders would need to lose a child before protecting the rest of them and making the necessary changes NOW...

Frank Taaffe says he now believes Zimmerman should have been found guilty in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. What I know of George and his tendencies and also my opinion is that he racially profiled Trayvon Martin that night," he said "If that had been a white kid on a cellphone, walking through our neighborhood, he wouldn't have stayed on him the way he did, and that's a fact, and I believe that in my heart.

The problem has been the focus on irrelevant arguments – some of which are actually unsupported by the evidence.

1. ‘George Zimmerman (GZ) racially profiled Trayvon Martin (TM)’ There is no evidence of this.

2. ‘GZ disobeyed an order by the police’ * The civilian dispatcher, Sean Noffke, testified that he did not give GZ an order and, in fact, he, like his fellow dispatchers, are trained not make comments that sound like commands. * Noffke also testified under cross that, as a result of his asking GZ which way TM was going, GZ could have reasonably interpreted this as being asked to follow Martin. * It is also not a crime in Florida to disregard a comment made by a civilian dispatcher.

3. ‘GZ got out of his car’ Not a crime on public property and not negligent either.

4. ‘GZ followed TM’ Again, anyone can follow anyone on a public street unless the followee has obtained a restraining order against the follower and even there, the RS only places time, place, and manner restrictions on the person enjoined.

5. ‘GZ wasn’t really injured’ * Under Florida’s self-defense laws, one doesn’t have to be injured AT ALL to use deadly force * No one is required to refrain from defending himself while another is engaged in or attempting to commit a felony.

6. ‘TM is dead through no fault of his own’ * If you believe that TM assaulted GZ, then he IS dead as a result of his own actions.

7. ‘GZ could have left’ * Under Florida law, there is not a duty to withdraw rather than use deadly force * TM was straddling GZ so how the latter was supposed to leave the scene is unanswered.

8. ‘GZ was armed and TM wasn’t’ * One’s fists can be considered weapons and can result in severe bodily harm or death. * GZ was legally carrying a weapon * There is no requirement under the law that the same weapon be used by the assailant * A homeowner can kill an intruder whether or not he has been threatened * Those that attack cannot feign surprise if they are met with superior firepower.

9. ‘Stand Your Ground!’ * SYG is NOT at issue in this trial. * The defense is a classic self-defense case.

10. ‘Black men NEVER get to use SYG!’ * Wrong http://tinyurl.com/nboht35

11. ‘GZ is a man and TM was a boy!’ * As if ‘boys’ don’t commit murder, rape, and assault everyday in this country.

Eric Puntervold, even the eye witnesses saw different versions of the same show. Some people aren't as observant as others, different viewpoints and visibility conditions. And there is eye witness account that Brown charged the officer. I couldn't tell anyone what the real story that unfolded was, but the officer has detailed medical records that show he was assaulted and fractures of his facial bones around the eye. Evidence is evidence and like Trayvon Martin, the physical signs of a struggle supposedly exist.

..............oh yeah,  and "TRAYVON and MICHAEL TOGETHER AT LAST" T-SHIRTs are available for $29.95 plus shipping and handling, of course, make checks payable to SABRINA FULTON who is pushing herself into this story here to grab some attention ..........................

puh-leeze !

RACHEL JEANTEL set the record straight that trayvon was too stupid to simply run away and went back to zimmerman to give him some "whoop ass" - go read the court testimony

we saw the same years ago with TAWANA BRAWLEY lies that REV SHARPTON endorsed

once the real truth comes out about MICHAEL BROWN,  there is already an eye-witness that indicated through his attorney,  that a "TUSSEL" had taken place with BIG MIKE and the cop, after BIG MIKE strong-armed the store of cigars  - so resisting arrest for starters is already a "mistake", ON TOP OF THE "mistake" of strong-arm robbery

.................now the "parents" are so concerned - yeah for M O N E Y !........tell me, MS FULTON,  where the condo homeowner insurance carrier's $1,ooo,ooo settlement money went !

I'm almost positive they will keep being ignored. Rioting and looting, destroying your town only reinforces all the negative stereotypes surrounding them. Very effective. Great job.

Maybe if someone had told these ladies to teach their sons some class and respect instead of letting them be the disrespectful ratchets they were, maybe they'd still be alive. Yes the police have waaaay too itchy of trigger fingers but if u play w fire ur going to get burned.

Amanda Drewniak...what crime? What did the kid steal? You can clearly see he paid for something thats why the store did report a theft.

Ed Ochoa what "5 minutes of fame"??? How could you think this is about fucking fame? Her son was murdered, you animal. She's expressing support. Have some goddamn empathy.

Brown didn't get shot for stealing cigars via strong arm robbery (vs simple shoplifting) ... he got shot for whatever happened on that street when the cop approached him. Nobody but the eye witnesses know what happened, and from the info coming out, it's looking more and more like the kid was aggressive towards the cop.

Amanda Drewniak
Amanda Drewniak

Mickey Blue this is the problem here. The officer that shot Brown was not even responding to that call. Brown's previous activities we completely unknown. The office who shot him was trying to harrass two kids on the street. Please do not spread propaganda that warps the truth of the situation. Additionally, they have NOT confirmed that the tape released is Brown committing that crime.

So he WASN'T caught on video roughing up a convenience store clerk?

Stop comparing Trayvon Martin to Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Martin was not shot by the police. The standard your ground defense was thrown out before trial. The Garner and Brown cases are not about 2 civilian idiots having a scuffle outside in the dark about who is more manly. The Garner and Brown cases are about the freedom of citizens from a Police State.

But of course, anything to extend her 5 minutes of fame

Yeah, when looting is going on, that can't be ignored. I propose they respond to looters and vandals by shooting them.

.....................actually everywhere this happens a dozen or so years later luxury high-rise condo units are built and sold to rich-WHITEs reclaiming the area as "gentrification" and ALL the BLACK people are physically moved out with section 8 vouchers, or incarcerated, or dead

in a cynical way seeing real-estate developers hoover like vultures enjoying the price of land go down until entire blocks can be purchased at the right price this whole scene is so predictable and repeated over and over again you would think the BLACK people would see this by now

Chicago's south-side will follow CABRINI GREEN and the BLACKs reap no legacy or benefit in getting evicted and ousted - used to be unscrupulous SLUM-LORDs would have to burn tenants out of their units - now we just give them section 8 housing vouchers to migrate elsewhere = period

.....................the parents only have these kids to qualify the parents for government support and housing assistance and food stamps and benefits - once these kids hit their teens the parents throw them away - "throw-away" kids are those who are reaching majority and will not longer qualify their parents for government funding - so these parents simply throw them away - no college no legacy no future parental obligation to them they become simply a burden the parents no longer want

Also if that video were depicting a robbery, it would have made the 5 oclock news THAT NIGHT.  We'd hear about the heroic officer who stopped the big mean armed robber.  The officer would have been identified the original night.  This wouldn't have gone past Sunday.  As it was, the police admit to waiting 5(Five!)days before watching, they still haven't interviewed direct eye witnesses.  They haven't interviewed the officer.  They haven't released document one.  They also started the confrontation in the first place by literally trampling the memorials that the locals set up, inflaming already burning passions.  If there were a reported crime, we would have known about it within hours not days.  This entire situation is fucked.

.......................where was these "parent" when this kid was robbing the cigars in a STRONG-ARMED robbery - the store attendant should have shot BIG MIKE right then and there = period

Let's face it. Michael was no Trayvon Martin. He wasn't walking home with a bag of Skittles. Michael Brown robbed a convenience store of some cigars to make blunts out & he ended up getting shot. The cop may have over reacted, but there is no doubt Michael brought it on

@DRAKEMALLARD.0

so did trayvon according to rachel jeantel's testimony trayvon was going back to zimmerman to give him some "whoop ass"

trayvon was too stupid to just keep running away AND called rachel during the incident instead of HIS PARENTs because they didn't give a damn about him then

trayvons mother was mad at rachel for being honest because now she had no way to CASH IN like she did against the homeowners insurance carriers cha-ching for $1,ooo,ooo !

if that carrier would have settled AFTER the verdict they could have paid MUCH less but most went to trayvons attorney anyway

................the whole thing is a MONEY GRAB - these "parents" could care less about these kids = period
