Seafood Salad at Mr. Yum
Who: Food Tweeters @ktchntrvwr and @ergagit joined by three work buddies
What: Seafood Salad
Where: Little Havana at Mr. Yum
When: This past Friday, 1:00 p.m.
Why: @ergagit lost a Top Chef bet to @ktchntrvwr (guessing who would win last Wednesday's Bocuse d'Or episode) and the wager was lunch, in this case, stealing away to Mr. Yum for an hour of chit, chat, and munch. You may be familiar with this electric Asian eatery rubbing elbows with other colorful characters on S.W. Eighth Street that Lee Klein reviewed in September. It's a convenient meeting place whether you work in the Gables or Downtown. @ergagit, known for letting the truth be told, was in the driver's seat and selected something for the table to nibble on that we hadn't heard about, the Seafood Salad. Ordering skills? On point. Gambling? Not so much. Fresh tempura calamari, shrimp, and scallops are tossed with Thai spices, lime juice, strips of red onion, red pepper ribbons, and cashews, served warm on a bed of greens. Can a salad be at once light and refreshing, yet satisfy in a way only a hot main course can? Yes! There were flashbacks to a must-loved, frilly fried calamari and frisee salad once enjoyed at China Grill, but this rendition punched up the flavor meter several notches. Wait a minute... Whose bright idea was to share this?& Such a tease!
