Free Pizza With Basel
Luna Corner Pizza (6815 Biscayne Blvd.) is throwing a grand opening bash this coming Saturday, December 5th, from noon to 6:00 p.m., right smack dab in the middle of the Taste of MiMo festival, right smack dab in the middle of Art Basel. Free tastings of gourmet Italian pizzas will be handed out, and Luna Corner has agreed to donate 10% of the proceeds from the event to the Miami Arts Charter School. The Charter School's students will be entertaining via carolers, dancers and sketch artists. That sounds sort of awful, but the restaurant will also unveil a temporary art installation featuring decorated pizza boxes -- which sounds worse, but should in fact be interesting, as the exhibit consists of small and large white Luna Corner Pizza cartons that have been covered with poems, photographs and drawings by the students. The event is free and open to the public. And maybe you should buy a slice of pizza after gulping down the freebies so you can feel good about having donated something to a worthy cause -- you know, like teaching kids to express themselves by scrawling upon pizza boxes.
 
Everybody Wants To Be A Critic, Part 137
"Welcome to my blog. I am the blue collar food critic. I really know the best places for good food at decent prices." So begin the rantings of the latest local food blogger. Here's a sampling of his initial mission-statement post:

"I am fed up with the people who write reviews as to who has the best burger, the best pizza, best breakfast, etc. I am sick of being disappointed from Zagat recommendations, AOL "winner surveys" newspaper critics and the like. {EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm sure he meant to add "except for the brilliant Lee Klein", but sometimes bloggers rush these things and leave out crucial details} I have decided to do something about all the hype and bullshit I have encountered when going out to eat at these so-called survey winners.  Overpriced mediocre food, lousy service, long waits for tables, seems to be the norm around here.  Why should you be misinformed?  Why go out and spend your hard earned money only to be fooled by the so called critics who claim to know who has the best food..."

The blue collar guy wrote me an email a short while ago, lauding my mention of La Sandwicherie, but lambasting my thumbs up to 8-Oz. Burger, whose burger left him cold, and to Fratelli Lyon, which he felt was too expensive. His comments were valid -- I only mentioned that homemade pasta with high quality ingredients for less than $17 is not as ubiquitous as he might think.

Anyway, good luck blue collar guy, and welcome to the club -- just grab a number and please wait in line.
