Got Milk? Got Ethics? Got A Barf Bag? Then Get Ready For This

Categories: Food Politics
ABC News Nightline aired an exposé on the dairy industry last night that should outrage any human being with feelings. "Got Milk? Got Ethics? Animal Rights v. U.S. Dairy Industry," written by Brian Ross and Anna Schecter, included a video made inside a huge New York farm, Willet Dairy, milk from which is used in the cheese products of Pizza Hut, Papa John's, and Domino's. There are many ugly scenes, like the one in which a cow gets hit upside the head with a wrench, but the footage of "tail docking" -- a prevalent industry practice in which cows have the ends of their tails chopped off without anesthesia  -- is just plain sickening.

The practice was banned in California last year and a bill to prohibit tail docking was introduced last week in the New York legislature.

"Science has shown repeatedly this practice is barbaric and totally unnecessary," said Jennifer Fearing, California director of the Humane Society of the United States, which helped push the passage of legislation in Sacramento.

"I don't think it would help to create an army of tail police to go around and check whether some cows have portions of their tails cut off," said Chris Galen of the National Milk Producers Federation.

I say we chop an appendage off of Chris Galen, and off of others of his despicable ilk. Plus there are other things you can do to help, such as switching to soy milk, or contacting Mercy for Animals, the group that made this video, and see what can be done to stop this horrific act.
