Food & Wine Magazine: Lazy and Anti-Hispanic? (Updated)

• VPE, L2M, and SAM -- The point Chuck is making is that chefs such as Rodriguez and Bernstein aren't new NOW, but they were new when they started out -- thus each at some point would have been eligible for best new chef. I'm not gonna step into the anti-Hispanic debate here, but were there really ten chefs that started the same year as Rodriguez that were putting out better, more important new American cuisine than he was doing at YUCA?

• Bad fact #1: the award goes to a new chef, all the chefs you listed have been around a minute. Bad fact #2: Michael Psilakis is not, nor ever was, based in Miami Worst missed fact: Angel Palacios was named a best new chef in 2003 for La Broche in Miami. He's from Spain, thus Hispanic. So yes, a Hispanic and a Miamian have been named Best New Chef.

• Bernstein is hardly a 'new' chef. Only best new chef I'd nominate is jeremiah and I don't think he's hispanic. and who cares if they are hispanic or not. if they're good, they're good and obviously there isn't a new Miami chef that's good enough, at least for F&W anyway!

• Edgar Leal is another. He and the rest were new chefs when they entered our scene. We are talking about a decade of ignoring Hispanics.

• Chuck: I wonder whom you would suggest? I've been reviewing restaurants in Miami for a decade and, indeed there are only a handful of chefs who could compete on the national scene. For F&W New Chef they cannot be veterans like our very talented Doug Rodriguez or Michelle Bernstein (Hispanic but not in name). I've got my eye on a couple of young chefs but am waiting until they get to the right venue and stage in their career to put their names out there. I seriously would like to hear your nominations.

• What a stupid article. The author makes a broad assumption that (a) a Hispanic, and (b) a Miami chef, are worthy of the award, but does not give one name of a Miami and/or Hispanic chef to justify his argument agsinst the magazine. What if there are no worhty chefs, Chuck? Since when must a magazine apply affirmative action? Food & Wine should sue MNT for libel.
