Deep-fried tofu in bonito broth.
Japanese pub food is the big trend in Tokyo. Recently, this tapas-inspired way of eating has spread from Tokyo to New York and Los Angeles. On vacation in New York, I popped into Izakaya Ten in Chelsea. This atmospheric eatery features a small bar with an impressive list of sake by the glass. Tables in the rear of the space were packed with hipsters chowing down on small plates of tasty Japanese fare.

Spicy pickled cucumbers.
We sampled a wide array of dishes spanning spicy pickled cucumbers, deep-fried tofu in bonito broth, vegetable tempura, chicken meatballs, grilled shishito peppers, diced filet mignon with garlic soy sauce, and a spicy tuna roll. Although the portions are miniature, each plate packed a flavorful and complex punch. Of course, we washed it all down with sake.

Locally, the best place to experience this cuisine is at Hiro's Yakko-San in North Miami Beach.
