Naked Pizza Coming To South Beach

Short Order noticed the "coming soon" sign for Naked Pizza on the corner of 13th and Washington and we've been intrigued by the name ever since. Just what exactly constitutes a naked pizza? And why has it taken so long to come to South Beach, where most people parade around half-dressed?

Naked Pizza, it turns out, is a healthful chain. The concept started in New Orleans in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina. Three years later, the firm secured financing from Kraft Group and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Currently, there are 96 Naked Pizzas in development, including the South Beach branch. The company predicts that number will rise to 1,000 in the next five years.

What makes Naked Pizza unique is that the "Ancestral Blend" crust is a mixture of whole grains, nuts, roots and heat-resistant probiotics. (For a $1 extra you can order the gluten-free crust.) The part skim mozzarella cheese is all natural, and all of the meat and sauces are free of preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats, additives and chemicals. Furthermore, the pizza combinations are creative and inventive. Toppings include the Omnivore (pepperoni, hamburger, ham, bell pepper, mushroom, black olive), Superbiotic (artichoke, spinach, bell pepper, mushroom, garlic, cilantro, onion), Sonoran (onion, chicken, mushroom, fire roasted red pepper) and Mediterranean (artichoke, sun dried tomato, onion, black olive, feta). There's also a unique version of breadsticks, called Mojomega Breadstixx, which are made from the same Ancestral Blend pizza crust and topped with mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

South Beach's version of Naked Pizza is set to debut in August. Until then, you can read the healthful living blog and dream about the Superbiotic pie.
