World Cup 2010 Fever Catches On at Miami Restaurants (Updated)

With only nine days until the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, excitement is building for the most watched sporting event in the world. And when it comes to places to watch the games in Miami, the choices go beyond the usual sports bar suspects.

Many Miami restaurants will open their doors a little earlier starting June 11 to show most of the month-long cup's games. Games are scheduled for 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (see full World Cup schedule). Not surprisingly, many places will not open at 7:30 a.m.

There's a high chance that you'll run into working TVs showing the games around town, but here are some places where you can watch the beautiful game accompanied by good food and drink.

At Sra. Martinez, fútbol will play on two TVs upstairs and one projection screen. The restaurant will open for the 10 a.m. games and offer some breakfast-style items and specialty cocktails. To accompany the afternoon games, it will offer an extended bar menu and drink specials, including $4 beers.

Mercadito in Midtown Miami will broadcast the 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. games and offer $25 all-you-can-eat tacos during the matches. The catch? Everyone at your table must partake in the offer. Neighboring Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill will also show some World Cup games but will maintain its regular opening time of 11:30 a.m.

Segafredo Brickell, Novecento Brickell and Brickell Irish Pub say they have "joined forces" to become the World Cup headquarters on Brickell. The trio will show games starting at 10 a.m. and offer drinks and special menu items inspired by the cuisines of participating countries. Novecento locations in Coral Gables and Lincoln Road will also show the games.

JB Kitchen & Bar goes a step further to keep fans entertained. In addition to showing the games and offering daily drink and food specials, the restaurant will set up Playstations, a foosball table, and hold contests throughout the day. JB Kitchen will open for the 10 a.m. games and maybe some 7:30 a.m. games depending on the popularity of the teams playing.

In downtown Miami, MIA at Biscayne will open its doors at 7:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays during the World Cup. Chef Gerdy Rodriguez will offer a special world cup brunch menu through noon and a $14.95 executive lunch for the afternoon games.

Fritz and Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables will open at 7:30 a.m. throughout the World Cup and serve coffee and breakfast. So will John Martin's Irish Pub, which will offer $3 Buds and free continental breakfast during the morning games.

And in North Miami, Flip Burger Bar - no relation to Flip Burger Boutique in Atlanta - expects to open its doors in time for June 11. Carrying 50 beers from around the world, burgers and sandwiches, the 30-seat restaurant will show all games starting at 10 a.m. on its five flat-screen TVs.

Other options include Bin No 18 near downtown, 72 Bar + Grill in South Miami (selected games only) and Sylvano in Miami Beach. And, naturally, you can always go to Churchill's. Where will you watch?

Update: Lucky Strike will open early and serve an $8 all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. SushiSamba will serve a World Cup-inspired menu for morning games and specialty cocktails during Brazil games. Panizza on Lincoln Road will also show all games.
