Denny's Late Night -- Still Hungry

​Denny's website says, "We're morning people. All day. Every day. Since 1953." Apparently, the individuals working at the Denny's on Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach got up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday. Or maybe not at all.

Close to 1 a.m. on a recent early morning, my husband and I ventured in for some late-night dining. Or so we thought. As soon as we entered the restaurant, we were almost run over by a group of kids playing tag -- or something like it. It was past midnight, and the parents seemed completely unfazed by their 2-year-olds running through the restaurant throwing fries and squirting ketchup at each other. The so-called hostess grunted as she grabbed two menus and directed us toward a booth by the window. There were only a handful of occupied tables and about a dozen staff members milling about. These were all signals from some cosmic force telling us to leave, but we stubbornly persevered.

After ten minutes with no one coming to our table, we motioned to the hostess for someone over to take our order. This set off an argument between three women who clearly were confused about whose section we were in. Finally, we placed our orders for two sodas, a Superbird, and cheeseburger sliders. That was a mistake.

The sodas and Superbird came and went, but the sliders were nowhere to be seen. Our inquiries were answered with a shrug of the shoulders by our "overworked" waitress who simply said, "The kitchen is backed up." Then we glanced to the open kitchen and determined that "backed up" is Denny's lingo for "on the phone with an irate girlfriend."

After an hour, we left, having consumed the Superbird and three soda refills. The hostess's comment: "You sure you don't want it to go? It's almost ready."
