Cloned Coffee Cooler Recipes From Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks

In 1987, Todd Wilbur of Orange County, California, started his Top Secret Recipes website, on which he dissects well-known name-brand foods and creates original recipes that clone their appeal. The site has been "undergoing construction" for quite some time, but the recipe section remains -- with everything from Aunt Jemima's maple syrup to Chick-fil-A's chicken sandwich to a Mars Three Musketeers bar. Dunkin Donuts Coffee Coolatta
"All it takes is one slurp of Dunkin Donuts hit frozen coffee drink to determine there is much more than concentrated coffee, sugar, and milk in there. I detect vanilla and hazelnut flavors, but adding just a bit of almond extract and some chocolate syrup completes the flavor profile. Torani makes hazelnut syrup that's perfect for this recipe -- you'll find it near the coffee in your market or in a bar supply outlet. Your drink will come out lighter in color than the real thing, since the chain apparently uses caramel coloring to darken the formula. This recipe makes one 24-ounce serving -- that's called 'medium' at the store, or you can split it into two more modest 12-ounce servings."

1 1/4 cups strong coffee, cold (see Step 1 below)
1 cup milk
5 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons Hershey's chocolate syrup
1 tablespoon Torani hazelnut syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups ice cubes

1. Brew strong coffee by using twice the amount of grounds required by your coffee maker. That should be 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per each cup of coffee. Chill before using.

2. Combine the cold coffee, milk, sugar, chocolate syrup, hazelnut syrup, vanilla, and almond extract in a blender and blend for 1 minute on low to dissolve sugar.

3. Add the ice and blend on high until ice is crushed and drink is smooth. Pour into a tall 24-ounce glass or two 12-ounce glasses, and serve with straws.

Makes one 24-ounce serving or two 12-ounce servings.

Starbucks Frozen Frappuccino
"It was in 1995 that Starbucks stores started selling this frozen drink, one of the company's most successful new products. The Frappuccino is blended with strong coffee, sugar, a dairy base, and ice. Each one is made to order and each one is guaranteed to give you a throbbing brain freeze if you sip too hard. The drinks come in several different varieties, the most popular of which I' ve cloned here for your frontal lobe-pounding, caffeine-buzzing pleasure."

3/4 cup double-strength coffee, cold
1 cup low-fat milk
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 cups ice

1. Make double-strength coffee by measuring 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per cup serving in your coffee maker. The clone will be even more authentic if you use Starbucks beans and grind them yourself just before brewing.

2. To make the drink, combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until ice is crushed and drink is smooth. Pour into two 16-ounce glasses, and serve with a straw.

Makes 2 "Grande" drinks.

Caramel
For this version, add 3 tablespoons of caramel topping to the original recipe above and prepare as described. Top each glass with whipped cream and drizzle additional caramel over the whipped cream.

Mocha
For this version, add 3 tablespoons Hershey's chocolate syrup to the original recipe and prepare as described. Top each glass with whipped cream if desired.
