Earth Learning launched the South Miami Farmers Market in early December. Organized with the city of South Miami and the South Miami Green Task Force, the market is one of the few year-round venues in town. And even though it's small, you'll find great stuff like locally grown watermelon radishes, oyster mushrooms, and grass-fed beef.

This Saturday the market will host its grand opening with live music, food from gastroPod Miami Raaga Cart, a free yoga class from Green Monkey Yoga Studio, a small ceremony with the South Miami mayor and, of course, the produce and prepared foods sold there since the market's inception. There's reason to celebrate.

"[The market] is going beautifully," said market manager David Harper. "Our main goal is to build a loyal following of local residents who think of this as their community marketplace, the place to go on a Saturday to buy fresh foods, meet their neighbors and friends, and enjoy the market atmosphere that is part of life in cultures all over the world. We are doing that. We see many of the same faces each week, and they are excited to have a hometown market."

Harper says he doesn't really do numbers but he estimates the market has an average of 500 visitors each Saturday and his goal is to raise that number to 1,000 in the next five months.

The market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 6130 Sunset Drive. The grand opening festivities will take place during market hours on January 22.
