Waffles and Records: A Talk with Lolo Reskin
|It's about the food, not the plates!|
Short Order communicated with Sweat's owner and party's organizer Lolo Reskin about, well, waffles, of course.
New Times: This is part of a national movement for eating waffles?
Lolo Reskin: Not necessarily, though there is an annual Global Vegan Waffle Party which will be celebrated for the fourth time this coming May. For us it's just a fun, logistically-simple food event to have at our shop, and the response has been tremendous-people have been bringing their families, club kids have stayed up the whole night just to come eat waffles with us in the morning.
|Something for everyone.|
Find me one person who can tell the difference. We've got a surefire recipe that we use and carnivores and vegans alike have praised their deliciousness. Baking is science so it's just a matter of replacing milk with soy milk, etc. I would even argue that they taste better, and are better for you since they're cholesterol-free and lower in fat. As for our toppings, we kick IHOP's ass. We use 100 percent pure maple syrup, fresh berries, almond butter, dark chocolate chips, organic walnuts, and other high quality ingredients.
Is everything provided by you guys?
We provide everything, all you need to bring is $6 and an appetite.
What do you hope to accomplish with the waffle parties besides feeding people?
We're all about breaking down the stereotypes associated with not eating meat, letting everyone know that it's not just some weird wheat-germ culture, and that vegans in Miami have more real options than ever. Trends indicate that people are at the very least reducing the amount of animal products in their diets, and vegan waffles are a fun way to introduce people to a healthier and more compassionate-but still tasty and satisfying-way of eating.
The Waffle Party takes place at Sweat Records (5505 NE 2nd Ave., Miami) from noon to 3 p.m. every other Sunday. The next is on Feb. 27. Don't forget your six bucks!
