74. Vegetarian-Smoked Duck at Shing Wang Chinese
| Lee Klein |
Or at least it looks, feels, and tastes like smoked duck. In fact, it's a soy-wheat gluten mock duck with crisp "skin" and smoky, ducky flavor. Will it fool a duck aficionado? Probably not, but that's not the point. It tastes great and is an apt substitute for vegans, vegetarians, people who perhaps have an allergy or aversion to poultry, or just folks looking for a more healthful take on the bird. It comes with a side of rice for $11.95, making it the priciest menu item, mock or otherwise (real meats are served here too).
Shing Wang has been putting out delectable Chinese fare since 2008. Faux chicken, beef, and seafoods are available in dishes such as General Tso's chicken, but nowadays there are also Taiwanese specialties like braised pork stew and lemongrass beef. Still, it's the smoked duck that you just can't get anywhere else in town.
