Colombian White for a Different Kind of Buzz

Bringing a new product to market is an ambitious endeavor. But for three Miamians, a strong friendship, Colombian roots, and a mutual love of aguardiente has led them to commercialize Colombian White -- a premium spirit derived from sugar cane with hints of anise.

It all began at Juan Saldarriaga's wedding. Clearing out bottles of tequila, vodka, and gin at the end of the night, he noticed that his country's national drink, aguardiente, was nowhere in the mix. Because aguardiente production is largely state-run in Colombia (unless you live in a neighboring country), there is not much export. Only a handful of brands make their way to our shores. Saldarriaga and his two partners, Mike Oviedo and Hernst Bellevue, are looking to change that. Their goal is to have the clear, 40-proof spirit be the next big thing to hit the U.S. liquor industry.

The name Colombian White, not to be confused with another popular export item, "is not a play on words but rather is meant to literally describe the clear, white spirit" Oviedo says, "but a little controversy is never a bad thing." The trio is targeting a "young and artistic" crowd and has already caught the attention of Spliff Star, who incorporates Colombian White in his song "This Right Here." Not bad for a brand that is due to launch this fall.

Short Order, along with some local artists and musicians, was invited to participate in a blind tasting of three final formulations. We judged on smell, flavor, and finish before selecting our favorite. All three had recognizable anise flavor to varying degrees. There was a general consensus on the favorite, but also a clear difference in what appealed to the men as opposed to the women. It's now up to the threesome to settle on a winning formula and get the party started.

i don't think this drink is even out yet. it sounds dope though. there are premium tequilas and vodkas out there why not an aguardiente. the name is pretty catchy.

Well such publicity over a drink! First: I think people that aren't successful on their own lives write vile things about people who have the talent to create something amazing. Second: I personally can't wait to taste this drink. It sounds exciting and I am glad that these men have brought a bright idea to the market to represent our colombian roots! We have to think that it is a white liquor from colombia Colombian white very witty idea! I'll drink to that.

What?! I've never had any problem finding aguardiente! In Miami you can find it in any corner liquor store, well at least in Hialeah. I even remember stopping in at a random liquor store somewhere in SW Broward and finding plenty of it. I only realized it wasn't plentiful till I tried buying it in Orlando, even in a heavily Hispanic part of the city.

I am personally very excited to rediscover and reconnect to a past that only Aguardiente can allow. To dance and to raise shot glasses; to celebrate and create new memories is what I'm looking forward to the most. Cheers! Viva el guaro!!!!!

WOW, this response must have taken you a LONG time to type huh? WWAAAAHHHHH

Must feel weird for someone you went to school rising up to success meanwhile you're still in you complacent job in your ordinary life. How about congratulating the Cuban or Colombian or Hairtan or fuckin' Human who is actually making their dreams be tangible in your pathetic reality. Such a hater; so much envy. It's actually amusing to read your thoughts...

Go play with your Colombian lizard!

Minus well? Well, I MIGHT AS well tell you that the name and it's double entendre (look it up) was meant to do exactly that.. make ignorant people like you question the name and wonder what it is... #IGNORANCEISN'TBLISS

Very true it's liqour for poor people in the hood and Colombian white is an insult to Colombians using it as a name of cocaine

I'm all for it! There shouldn't be any reason Aguardiente can't become recognized at an international level. Viva el guarro! Viva Colombia!

Lol... success i think i have that... I have a house paid off and own my own business distributing reptiles and fish to big name and small pet shops locally and nationwide that i have been having since 2001, I employee more than 30 people year round and 65 on and off season, so don't talk to me about success. my anger came because of the name of the product not what it is or who's doing it. Why do we Colombians always have to refer to cocaine and drugs to make something cool or hip, you lost the point i was trying to make, if you were black you wouldn't like to be called the n word or be refereed as or make a product called N word or related to that...

By The Way: if you have a problem with me then don't buy yourself or your kids any reptiles or fish they more than likely come from my company

I understand that, and I'm sure to try it out. But the article hinted that good ol' aguardiente is hard to come by in South Florida. I don't think that's true at all. You can bet I've had more than my fair share of Aguardiente Antioqueno.

Its a Colombian white liquor...creative idea! I think it's time we have someone popular out there that challenges our traditional stereotypes brings something new and something special to the table.I say lets not be so closed minded.
