It's the best thing to happen to theater snacks since we started dropping Sno Caps in our popcorn. Gourmet concessions are coming to Coral Gables Art Cinema.

At the concession stand in the Cinema Cafe, movie-goers will be able to pick up tastier bites than your average hot dog and Slushee combo.

"We wanted to make this more of a hangout spot. It's a very different experience than going to most multiplexes where you go in and out," says theater director Robert Rosenberg.

The theater is offering popular brand items as well as favorites from local bakeries. Start off with an appetizer, perhaps a bite-sized quiche ($2.25; broccoli, spinach, and Lorraine) from Chocolate Fashion. Then move on to a box of rolls from Sushi Maki, with a side of mango curry chicken or tuna salad from Green Gables Cafe.

For dessert, your sweet tooth won't be disappointed. Chocolate Fashion's giant cookies ($4.50), petit fours ($2), and glazed tarts ($4), and local chocolatier Romanicos' bars ($3.95) will beat the Dibs and Buncha Crunch you're used to inhaling before the opening credits start to roll.

As of now, Gables Cinema's liquor license is still in the works, but there are new Izze soft drinks and Lavazza coffee to hold you over until then.

Rosenberg also plans on adding outdoor seating as well as an in-theater wait service to their late night showings. "I want to make it more like a party."
