Steal This Continental Breakfast: The Urban Forager's Guide, Vol. 1

continental_breakfast.jpg
Times are tough, so many people are searching for hotels with free continental breakfasts.

Problem is, some of those eating aren't guests, says Hampton Inn, says manager front desk clerk Alfonso Tobenas. That's right. Folks walk into tourist hotels and pose as guests to gain access to morning chow. Who would do such a thing? Lots of people, according to local hotel insiders.

"It is what it is, bro, times are tough and they're hungry," Tobenas says. "They're just trying to beat the system and save a buck. The first time you're going to get away with it, the second and third time I'm going to ask you to leave."

So how does Tobenas, who has worked five years at the hotel tucked away behind Dadeland Mall, spot the freeloaders? By the way they talk -- they can't hide that Miami accent -- and by the way they dress. Tobenas can spot a real tourist from across the room.

Tobenas says some people even regularly rotate hotels for their free breakfasts, but he recognizes their faces after a while. When he spots them, he lets them eat free-of-charge so they let their guard down. Then he confronts them and asks for their room number. At that moment, they realize they've been found out and generally leave without incident.

If they keep coming back, he either charges $7.50 -- the estimated cost of the breakfast per person for the hotel -- or calls the cops and have them charged with trespassing, though not usually with theft.

Amazed the ACLU haven't already leaped down the throats of accommodations necessitating room important factors or credit charge playing cards before enabling access to the offering area.

I love that Tobenas worked "it is what it is" and the 305-friendly, "bro" into his opening quote.

Taking what's not yours is somehow becoming fashionable with the socialists. What about the hotel guests who don't want to share the breakfast amenities with the local bums?

$7.50 for a hotel breakfast seems reasonable.  It typically costs a lot more than that, unless it's free; which I've never understood.

This could easily be taken care of.  Issue each guest a recipt that is to be used when they enter the eating area.  No coupon, you either pay or do not eat.

Stealing breakfast! My o' my, what criminals. Either they should sit quietly in the corner and starve to death or go to Wall street or Washington where the word "steal" no longer exists. How dare they. Muffin stealing, shot them on sight as well as those "grape testers" at the super market.

Oh crap!  Now the idiots are going to mess up one of the perks for staying at a hotel.  I always knew it was a matter of time.

I slept in my camper van many times in hotel parking lots and would use the bathroom in the am, but never would dare to try to get a free breakfast. Stealing is stealing. All part of the liberal minded, Ted Kennedy culture, moral decline of America.

What a sleazy hotel!  People do this because they're HUNGRY.  How can you deny a hungry person food?  I'm glad that the name of the hotel is given so I'll be sure never to stay there.

People are doing this because they're hungry.  What a slezzy hotel to throw out hungry people.  I bet this same hotel prides itself on annual donations to charity, too.  How about charity beginning at home, bums?

A) A sad testament to what passes for "ethics" in our society.  Short of cash?  Just steal breakfast.

B) A sad testament to the incompetence of our corporate leadership.  If you have people walking in and stealing breakfast, how about oh, maybe hiring someone at $10/hour for a couple hours a day part-time to check room keys at the table?   If it's even $25 worth of food taken you break even.  If not it's really not an issue worth worrying too much about as that is about $.10/room/night.

I used to work at a place where the GM thought "we couldn't afford" to have a $3.25/hr employee watch a thing where we charged $1 for you to use it.   About 500 people a day used it, and almost nobody volunteered to pay the $1.   He was losing $500/day in revenue at a small business till I took over and stopped that.  For $15 or so in payroll costs we brought in another $500/day.   Some people out there in management are just smiling faces who know how to get promoted.  They can't even do basic math.

I hate to point out that this has been happening for years all over the country for free food and using the hotels pools. I have heard many people tell me how to do this for over 20 years. And it's not only poor people but poeple looking to eat cheap. It is still stealing from the hotel and thier guests both

If they are hungry and can't pay, it's better to ignore the situation than to have them resort to theft and violence to survive.

Way to write an article openly advocating theft. You should be ashamed.

This is nothing new,One of the gals I worked with a few years ago, her and her hus would do that just about every morning, she was so brazen, she would take danish, rolls, fruit from the buffet, and eat it for lunch at her deskPSShe was making well over 50,000 a year

This nice guy is acting on the erroneous assumption that these are human beings doing this, so he treats them like humans. Eventually he'll probably be murdered by one of them or their "baby daddies." I'd immediately have them either in handcuffs or laid out in front of dey screamin' keeyids, and I'd laugh about it.

Sad sign of the times we live in. People are hungry and cannot afford to eat. Some may be just cheap bs ers but many are in need and don't know what else to do. Expect this kind of thing to become much more commonplace.

FIRST, these "free" meals are not worth the $7.50 if a freeloader is caught. At least the continental breakfasts I have had. The incentive to lure customers with these "perks" is more criminal.

SECOND, using the free breakfast for free security, or using your position in law enforcement to obtain special perks that position affords is of no concern to anyone else. There are no losses experienced to anyone else if these exchanges occur, so good for them.

A little supervision at the buffet would help reduce the number of free loaders.  I wonder how much of the food is thrown away that otherwise could be consumed by the homeless?

I've been doing this for years.  But I only do it if the hotel I'm staying in doesn't have as good of a breakfast as a nearby hotel.  Then I just go over to the other hotel and chow down there.  I don't mind if the management wants to have a heart and let other people come eat.  Hungry people need love too.

I am sure people have been doing this forever.

Spread the word folks: for your own good and that of others. Check out cbc.ca, Nov. 30th, short interview about your country and food stamps? It was just on program called "Mark Kelly Connects."  1 in 6 people using food stamps?  We were speechless. Consider the trillion bucks wasted on wars the pasts 10 years.

Let them eat the stale continental breakfast. It will make the hotels freshen up the food.

All they have to do is claim to be a part of Occupy Miami, then every local Democrat politician will support their right to engage in petty theft.

Sleazy hotel? I think not but you gave a sleazy response.  These people may be hungry but there are organizations in place to feed them for free.  The hotel isn't a soup kitchen.

I make a heck of a good batch of chilli and take to one of our local soup kitchens.  Once in a while when the feeling hits me, I go to Aldi and buy a bag of groceries and drop them off at the food bank.

I'm betting that from your response you don't do a thing except others to give free handouts.  I also bet you lock your house doors when you go away because you don't want people of need to steal your stuff.

@Oberon123It is not home, it is a business! Arrgh!
I ended up here because I thought the breakfast at the last hotel where I stayed was SO good, I'd love to go back and just eat breakfast :) (specially since I can't find that waffle recipe to save my life :-))
Hotels aren't in charge of feeding hungry people, it's not their job. But those of us who can help can always, always find a place to give money, food and/offer time serving meals to peoplein need.

My gosh this country is missing a lot of adults.

Is that what you say when freelaoaders turn up at your house? Oh, I get it, corporations don't have any right to prevent theft of their property like important peoople like you do.

vamars076

@Robertfalls57You have got to be kidding. By your "logic", people who didn't pay a penny are also "entitled" to free HBO. Or anything else on the sign!

You don't seem - many of you  - to get that this has to be paid for by someone. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Or breakfast. So I imagine we all get charged a bit more for our rooms to help the hotels recoup the stolen food. If you leave your address, we can send everyone to  your house!! :)

Again, these freeloaders aren't homeless; they are all put up on the taxpayer dime through Section 8. And they are increasingly moving them into nicer areas.

I have traveled to Florida several times along Interstate 95 and stayed in the hotels that offered free breakfasts. The hotel staff has told me that people who are not hotel guests simply leave 95 and stop into one these free breakfast hotels, chow down and get back on the road.
