Government "Inspector" Inspects 4-Year-Old's Lunchbox, Deems Contents Unhealthy

In a demonstration of government oversight reaching Orwellian proportions, a 4-year-old's lunchbox was inspected and its contents deemed inappropriate for her to eat.

The incident, which occurred at West Hoke Elementary School in North Carolina, is a perfect example of why the government should stay out of our kitchens and our bedrooms.

The offending food items? A turkey and cheese sandwich, a box of apple juice, a banana, and a bag of potato chips.

According to Sara Burrows from the Carolina Journal, "The girl's turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day."

"[Lunches] must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home."

Let's see. Grain? Check. Meat? Check. Two servings of fruit or vegetables? Check. So what happened?

Apparently the geniuses in North Carolina forgot that cheese is a dairy product. Burrows stated, "When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones."

What did the school give her to eat instead? Chicken nuggets.

Not only are these clowns taking the kid's lunch away to feed her something less healthy, but they told the kid that her mother had packed her an unhealthy lunch and they sent the mother a bill for the chicken nuggets.

I agree that some parents improperly feed their kids. In fact, when I'm grocery shopping I shudder when I see a mom and her kids pushing around a cart full of frozen and processed food, their cart loaded with chips, soda, and chicken nuggets.

But where does it end? Do we inspect every kid's lunchbox to see if it meets our standards? And who is hired to do so? Morons who don't even know that cheese counts as a serving of milk?

Thank God this isn't happening in Miami. I'd hate to gauge the "inspector's" reaction when he opens a lonchera to find a media noche, a bag of mariquitas, mango slices, and a café con leche.
