81. Bacon & Egg Udon at Gigi

We frowned upon this breakfast based udon ($12) at Gigi and avoided ordering it several times, but then one day the thought of scrambled eggs and thick slimy noodles suddenly seemed appetizing (yes, there was a hangover involved). And voila, it was like the clouds parted and a multi-hued sunrise appeared to greet us. Some brilliant mind at this restaurant had a lightbulb moment that involves meaty chunks of house smoked bacon and scrambled eggs, mixed in with thick strands of chewy udon noodles. Rings of scallion stick to the mounds of melted cheddar scattered in between, which is of a tangy aged variety. It may sound a little off in terms of ingredient concept, but the reality of the bacon & egg udon more than merits your attention on a Sunday morning.

ah, japanese pasta carbonara. oh course it makes sense -- one of the greatest dishes ever invented. glad these guys did their own take on it.
