31. Macarons at Villa Azur

Villa Azur is such a beautiful homage to the south of France that it's fitting the sweetest things of all are their gorgeous macarons ($12). These house made treats arrive looking more like Christmas decorations than something you might feast upon.

Red, green, and gold macarons arrive carefully plated, some lined with edible gold foil. As beautiful as they are, feel free to bite into them to appreciate the fresh fruit, dark chocolate, and rich pistachio flavors. An assortment of these feather light confections is the perfect ending to a romantic meal.

I know a thing or two about macarons. I have to say, these are delicious!

When I read that, I thought you were kidding. I'm from France and I think I know a thing or two about Macarons, especially after having tasted the ones from La Durée or even better, the ones from Pierre Hermé. I went to Villa Azur last month and was excited about the macarons for desert and they felt like they had been there for a week. Completely sub-par, the ones from Le Boudoir were actually better, although not as good as the ones I've had in France.

JC: Maybe you had a bad batch or (shudder) maybe they were stale.  The ones I was served were literally the lightest, freshest macarons I've had in a long, long time.

Laine, probably, that's what I thought since they tasted like they were made the day before but for a restaurant like Villa Azur they should always be super fresh and consistent in quality and taste....

I agree with you, but when something like that happens, it's best to nicely bring it to the attention of the manager.  Maybe they were fresh but were the container wasn't closed correctly...or something.
