Makoto's Soon-To-Disappear Menu: Top Asian Fare Draws Attention From Gossipy Housewives

When it comes to prix-fixe menus, the selections l are usually hit-or-miss. However in the case of Makoto, the Asian beauty in the Bal Harbour Shops, the anniversary menu boasts all the best selling items from the first year in operation. The celebratory list will wrap up May 31, so hurry over.

The restaurant has managed to make a lasting impression on neighborhood foodies.  Its serene, candle lit terrace is hard to miss on the upscale mall's cobblestone walkways.

Everything from tuna air bread, frosty Kobe fried rice and short rib robata were served up family style. For $45 per person, (minimum two people) -- this ain't bad in pricey Bal Harbour -- you can relax on the quaint outside couches under a palm tree, while five courses just keep on comin'.

On a recent night, I was seated next to some gossipy housewives, who were complaining about their husbands while throwing back sake. While their banter was entertaining, it was the food that kept our attention.

First course: Tuna crispy rice.

Smooth, blended dollops of rich tuna, smeared on the backs of four square bites of crispy tempura fried rice.

Tuna air bread.

Crispy, puff pastry meets its fish counterpart. Topped with tomato, olive and onion.

Eggplant & short rib robata.

Skewers of piping hot, marinated short rib and eggplant, roasting over a portable grill bed.

Swordfish & tuna rolls.

We favored the swordfish, personally.
