But neighborhoods are cyclical and Harlem, New York, which once was in a sorry state of disrepair, has gone through a major renaissance. Hoping to spur a similar rebirth is the Overtown Music Project, an organization dedicated to saving the music of this historic community through events that promote awareness of Overtown.
This Saturday, the organization presents One Miami United: A Non-Denominational Gospel Brunch Celebrating Overtown. Starting at 11:15 a.m., guests and worshipers will enjoy a one-hour, non-denominational service at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, complete with full gospel choir and special guest musicians. Special guests include Bobby Stringer, Cina, Tree Top, and Margaret Reynolds (who sang backup for KC and the Sunshine Band).
Immediately following the service, guests will enjoy a breakfast as soulful as the gospel they just enjoyed. Guests will be treated to Miss Vivian's homemade sweet potato pie, Mama's chicken and biscuits, and red velvet waffles.
Admission is $25 for people who live outside of Overtown and free to Overtown residents. Purchase tickets through Eventbrite or at the church right before service.
