Hipster Dust: Spices Packaged Like Drugs

Purchasing prepackaged food and dining out do seem a little mainstream. So does grocery shopping. This poses quite the conundrum for the young and über-authentic.

Which is why (actually probably not why) out of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, comes Hipster Dust, an "addictively natural" vegan spice mixture sold only on the Internet and packaged in round metal tins or one-gram sample sizes. With a trippy-looking pixie silhouette as its mascot, this stuff might just be mistaken for...

"Well, Hipster Dust is naturally addictive," owner Scott Keatley says. "As for the samples, one gram is the perfect amount to use on a single dish, and hipsters tend to love and identify the product immediately. Who knew?"

The ingredients listed on Hipster Dust are simple: spices and seasonings, granulated garlic, cayenne pepper, laver, sea salt, orange peel.

"The flavor is distinct yet familiar at the same time. It goes well with a variety of products, from watermelon to pasta dishes and everything in between," Keatley says. "It's got a kick that most other spices are afraid to include."

Thoroughly intrigued, we decided to test the product. Using Hipster Dust in a traditional chimichurri steak recipe, we came up with a tasty strip with a definite kick and twist.

For this recipe, we sprinkled Hipster Dust onto one side of the meat before searing it and then onto the steak and onions while on the pan, using a total of 1.5 grams.

Chimichurri Steak

Ingredients:
1½ grams of Hipster Dust

½ teaspoon olive oil

2 cloves chopped garlic
1 lemon
¼ teaspoon coarse sea salt
3 onion slices
1 cut of strip steak

The flavor of the Hipster Dust was a solid, piquant addition and seemingly a good shelf product for amateur cooks trying to eliminate the blandness of common quick eats.
