A source for local produce, now in Wynwood
Wynwood Farmers' Market will debut today, Saturday, at The LAB Miami, the entrepreneurial community campus for technological and social innovation. The campus has partnered with member Erin Healy, the founder of Youth L.E.A.D, an organization centered on creating healthy, environmentally sustainable, and equitable schools and communities throughout Miami-Dade County.

The market is funded by the Knight Foundation and will be held outside of LAB Miami's building, in the alleyway off of NW 26th street.

"There was a lot of interest from LAB, our partner and site of the market, and the Knight Foundation, to do the market. A lot of people seemed excited about the idea, so we decided to jump in and provide this much-needed service," Healy says.

There will be vendors selling empanadas, organic raw foods, local goat cheese, locally sourced fruits and vegetables, and herbs and spices by Spice Galore. There will be food trucks present too -- including Purple People Eatery. Youth L.E.A.D apprentices, who will be employed from the surrounding community, will run a juice and smoothie stand.

Wynwood's market will involve the surrounding area and provide the neighborhood with a source for affordable, fresh produce. The farmers' market will not only accept EBT cards. It will also provide two-for-one discounts up to $10 for shoppers on the food assistance program.

"There's no supermarket [in Wynwood], and not really any grocery stores either. We are an outlet for that," she says. "We've also been doing some outreach, among businesses, artist residences, and nearby houses, letting them know about the market."

At the present, Wynwood's market will run the last Saturday of every month. But its frequency may increase soon. "We are open to the possibility of making it a weekly market," she says.

Wynwood Farmers' Market will be open this Saturday, February 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The LAB Miami at 400 Northwest 26th Street.

What a bunch of self aggrandizing idiots. Anybody who really knows wynwood, knows that La Guardia fruit and vegetable market on the corner of NW 2 Ave And NW 34 street is THEE place for fresh fruits and vegetables (including organic). Just ask any of the restauranteurs in Miami, since they all shop there. These people are just more beach and gables posers coming in to "save" Wynwood. Why doesn't Knight Foundation support and sponsor Jose, the owner? he has been doing it every day for 20 years. Oh, i forgot, knight foundation likes to sponsor plagiarizers. Go away, please.
