Downtown still isn't a prime dining destination, yet there's a substantial need among the area's vast working population for good places to eat. So why is it that besides Ceviche 105 and a few other notables, there's not much buzz?

That could be changing with some business owners who saw an opportunity and took it. Three guys from Greece who had the idea to bring an espresso bar to the working nucleus of Miami. Their baby, Freshko Gourmet Espresso Bar, is the first attempt at what they expect to be a franchise.

Freshko started in Greece, where the trio owns and operates other similar venues. The concept is simple: an espresso bar that offers gourmet coffee, smoothies, juices, and other power drinks and fast-casual food. The food is meant for the downtown working crowd looking for cheap, fresh, and healthful eats. Don't expect to find deep-fried fare here. Everything is made daily from scratch and using fresh ingredients.

Opening bright and early at 7 a.m., Freshko offers breakfast specials that change daily according to availability. Baked goods are sold till they run out and consist of almond croissants, apple pies, and handmade Greek pies of spinach, feta, or Gruyère cheese, among other items.
