Asia de Cuba Closes at Mondrian, Planning Another Miami Locale

Asia de Cuba.jpg
In Miami, restaurants come and go quicker than the hopes of Marlins fans. Recently, the Mondrian Hotel's Asia de Cuba shut its doors after buying out of a partnership with Morgans Hotel Group.

The London and Los Angeles branches of the swanky Latin/Asian chain remain open, but Miami's outpost is no more -- at least temporarily. There's a planned reopening in another local space, according to brand reps, but they're in no hurry. The same group is also in the process of opening a new China Grill location in Brickell.

In a Facebook update in January, Asia de Cuba announced its upcoming closure and said it was in the process of seeking an "even more exciting" Miami location.

The brand is owned by China Grill Management (CGM), which is opening a new Miami China Grill location in Brickell later this year -- a replacement for the South Beach locale that shuttered last year.

It was a couple years ago that the CGM group officially bought out of Morgans, says Terry Zarikian, director of product development for China Grill Management. "We've been phasing out slowly. We want some continuity for the hotel guests, and we wanted to give Morgans Hotel Group time to figure out what they're going to do with the space."

Adds Zarikian: "We're looking for a new location here in Miami. We're so busy right now with the opening of the new China Grill on Brickell -- we really searched for that location many years. It takes awhile to find a location that you feel very comfortable with. We're not in a hurry; we just want it to be right."

No word yet on what the Mondrian has planned for the space, although Eater Miami reports that "the hotel group already has plans for a new spot to open in its place sometime 'later this fall.'" Short Order is waiting to hear back from the Mondrian for additional details on its plans, so stay tuned.
